Prof. Shambu Prasad Chebrolu, Professor, IRMA, "Tribhuvan" Sahkari University, has been featured as an expert contributor in The Business of Agrobiodiversity: Tapping Farmer Producer Organizations (Varshney & Chauhan, 2026), a new report by the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi. The study examines ten FPOs working with indigenous crop varieties across India and identifies policy gaps limiting their effectiveness.

In his commentary, Prof. Prasad drew on IRMA's research through the book Farming Futures to ask whether enabling conditions exist for FPOs to become sustainable transition intermediaries. He highlighted that reaching premium markets for indigenous varieties may require complementary social enterprises alongside FPOs, and identified the state as the most underutilized buyer - arguing that even sourcing indigenous varieties for midday meal schemes one day a week could anchor meaningful demand for farmers.

The report recommends a national policy framework for indigenous crops, dedicated market platforms, simplified seed certification, and ecosystem service payments for FPOs engaged in biodiversity conservation.

National Panchayati Raj Day | 24 April

Thirty-three years ago today, the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act came into force, a landmark moment that gave constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions and brought governance closer to the people who need it most.

At "Tribhuvan" Sahkari University, we recognise that Panchayati Raj and the cooperative movement are two branches of the same tree. Both are built on collective action, local ownership, and the belief that communities, not distant institutions, are best placed to shape their own futures. The Gram Panchayat and the village cooperative share the same ground: one governing the commons, the other organising livelihoods. Together, they form the institutional backbone of rural India.

As we build toward a Viksit Bharat, the convergence of democratic decentralisation and cooperative enterprise holds the greatest promise for inclusive, self-reliant rural development.

Here's to the sarpanch and the sahakar, the two pillars of India's village republic.

जय सहकार। जय ग्रामस्वराज।

From learning to impact.

For many working closely with farmers, insurance was once just a term, limited in understanding, distant in application.

In the training programme titled, "Training of Trainers on PMFBY and KCC" at “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University, that changed for its participants.

Participants speak of gaining clarity on crop and weather-based insurance, understanding the real value of PMFBY, and, most importantly, realising how critical this knowledge is for farmers who often remain unaware of their own entitlements. This learning is now set to travel beyond classrooms, reaching the last-mile farmer, strengthening awareness, and safeguarding livelihoods.

Because when those who support farmers are empowered, the impact multiplies where it matters the most.
