NATIONAL SEMINAR ON “REDEFINING SOCIAL JUSTICE: A CONSTITUTIONAL MANDATE” ORGANIZED BY DEPT. OF LAW, FAKIR MOHAN UNIVERSITY IN COLLABORATION WITH DISTRICT LEGAL SERVICE AUTHORITY, BALASORE on 22nd February, 2025.
Social justice, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution, aims to create an inclusive society by eliminating discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for all. The Preamble upholds justice—social, economic, and political—while Fundamental Rights (Part III) and Directive Principles of State Policy (Part IV) mandate affirmative action for marginalized communities. Landmark judicial interpretations, such as in Indra Sawhney v. Union of India (1992), have reinforced reservations and welfare measures to achieve equitable development. However, challenges like economic disparity, caste-based exclusion, and gender inequality persist. Redefining social justice requires progressive legal reforms, effective policy ex*****on, and community-driven initiatives to uphold the constitutional vision of an equitable and just society.

PARTICIPATION OF FACULTIES IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON UNIVERSAL VALUES AND NATIONAL REALITIES: EXPORING UDHR IN INDIAN CONTEXT ORGANIZED BY UTKAL UNIVERSITY FROM 5/4/2024 – 6/4/2024
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) embodies global principles of equality, dignity, and freedom. In the Indian context, these universal values align with constitutional rights, such as Fundamental Rights under Part III of the Indian Constitution, which guarantee equality, freedom of speech, and protection against discrimination. However, India faces challenges in fully realizing UDHR principles due to social inequalities, economic disparities, and regional conflicts. While India has made significant progress in human rights protection through progressive judicial interpretations, PILs, and social welfare policies, issues like gender inequality, caste-based discrimination, and freedom of expression restrictions remain. Bridging the gap between universal values and national realities requires stronger legal frameworks, effective policy implementation, and awareness campaigns to ensure human rights are upheld in practice.

EXTRA-MURAL LECTURE IN “PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES” BY DR. SAHANAWAZ ISLAM, SR. FACULTY, CAPITAL LAW COLLEGE, BBSR ON 14.11.2024
Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is a crucial tool for social justice, enabling individuals to seek legal remedies for public welfare. However, it faces several challenges, including misuse for personal or political gains, judicial overreach, and delays in case disposal, which weaken its impact. Courts also struggle with distinguishing genuine cases from frivolous ones and ensuring effective implementation of rulings. Additionally, inconsistent judicial interpretations create uncertainty. To preserve the integrity of PILs, strict guidelines, efficient case management, and better enforcement mechanisms are needed to prevent misuse and enhance their effectiveness in upholding justice.

A Brief Note on the Topic: Preparing Students for a Global Professional Landscape: Industry Insights for Educators and Use of AI in Legal Education
In today’s interconnected world, legal education must evolve to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in a global professional landscape. Educators should integrate interdisciplinary learning by combining law with technology, business, and international trade while also emphasizing global legal frameworks such as international treaties, comparative law, and cross-border dispute resolution. Soft skills, including communication, negotiation, and cultural competence, are essential for professional success, alongside strong ethical foundations. Practical exposure through internships, moot courts, and collaborations with global institutions ensures that students gain real-world experience. Additionally, the incorporation of technology and legal analytics in education is crucial, as modern legal practice increasingly relies on data-driven decision-making.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a transformative role in legal education, enhancing research capabilities through AI-powered tools like Westlaw Edge and LexisNexis, which streamline case law analysis. Personalized learning platforms leverage AI to create adaptive study plans and mock tests tailored to individual needs. Furthermore, AI assists in legal drafting, contract automation, and document review, preparing students for the digitalized legal landscape. Simulated courtroom training, powered by AI, allows students to practice litigation strategies in a virtual environment, while predictive analytics help them understand judicial trends and case outcomes. By integrating AI with industry insights, legal educators can prepare future-ready professionals equipped to navigate the complexities of international law and emerging technological advancements.

EXTRA-MURAL LECTURE ON ROLE OF MEDIA AND PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS BY- PROF.(DR.) SUKANTA KUMAR NANDA, DEAN, BGU .

ORGANISED BY:
DEPARTMENT OF LAW FAKIR MOHAN UNIVERSITY, BALASORE
DATE – 07/07/2024
A BRIEF ON THE LECTURE:
The media serves as a critical pillar in the protection and promotion of human rights, acting as a watchdog that ensures transparency, accountability, and justice. Through investigative journalism, news reporting, and digital platforms, the media plays a vital role in exposing human rights violations, including discrimination, oppression, and abuses of power by state and non-state actors. Additionally, the media serves marginalized and vulnerable communities, shedding light on injustices and advocating for policy reforms. By disseminating information on human rights laws, international conventions, and legal frameworks, it fosters awareness and encourages civic engagement in democratic societies.
In the digital age, social media platforms have further expanded the reach of human rights advocacy, enabling real-time reporting and mobilization. However, challenges such as misinformation, propaganda, and censorship pose significant threats to its effectiveness. Ensuring press freedom, ethical journalism, and fact-based reporting is essential for the media to fulfil its role as a defender of human rights globally.
