A placement gets you your first job. What you do after that builds your career.
That was one of the many practical reflections shared by Mr. Shashi Ranjan, IFIM/ JAGSoM alumnus, Class of 2005–07, during his recent interaction with JAGSoM students.
Drawing from nearly two decades of experience across enterprise sales, customer engagement, digital transformation and leadership, he spoke about what really matters beyond the résumé and the interview.
A few ideas that stayed with us:
“The purpose of a résumé is just to get you to the interview table.”
“Remember the three Cs: the company, the customers and the competition.”
“Leadership is not about designation. It is about taking ownership and accountability.”
“Do not chase designations. Learn from every role.”
“If you have to remain relevant, keep upgrading yourself.”
The session also explored the importance of the first 30, 60 and 90 days at work, learning from feedback, adapting to changing roles, staying relevant in the age of AI, and building a professional identity that goes beyond a job title.
Perhaps the strongest reminder was this:
Your first job is only the beginning. A career is built through learning, adaptability, ownership and the value you continue to create.
At JAGSoM, alumni interactions such as these bring lived industry experience back into the classroom - helping students connect academic learning with the realities of professional growth.
