The NLS Law and Society Archives organised a talk by Laxmi Murthy, Journalist and Researcher, and a member of the Saheli Collective (1987- 2006) on March 27, 2026.

She delivered an engaging session for students, exploring the history of the women’s health movement in India. Drawing on fieldwork, archival material from the Saheli collection at Archives@NCBS, and posters from Zubaan’s feminist publishing archive, she traced the evolution of feminist health activism in the country.

The session highlighted how campaigns built public awareness and challenged the introduction of contraceptive injectables during their trial phases, offering critical insights into advocacy, ethics, and resistance. Organised as part of the Historical and Anthropological Perspectives elective, the talk enriched classroom learning through archival and movement-based perspectives.

In an article titled 'Designed for addiction? A legal reckoning for social media,' Prof. (Dr.) Nigam Nuggehalli, Department of Revenue Chair Professor, writes that we underestimate the importance of design in our lives. We focus on acts and people, and we tend to take systems and structures for granted. But design elements – how our cities are built, how our educational institutions are governed, how our economic system is managed, and how our families are constituted – greatly impact our lives.

The Library Committee at the National Law School of India University ( ), Bengaluru recently hosted a Book Talk on “A Woman of No Consequence: Memory, Letters and Resistance in Madras” by Dr. Kalpana Karunakaran on April 9, 2026. The session featured a rich conversation between the author and Dr. Sudheesh R C, Assistant Professor, Social Science, NLSIU, bringing together reflections on memory, gender, and lived histories.

The book offers an intimate yet deeply anthropological account of the life of Pankajam (1911–2007), the author’s maternal grandmother, situating her experiences within the structures of Tamil Brahmin orthodoxy. Through letters and memory, it reveals how a life considered ‘ordinary’ becomes a powerful site of resistance and self-making. At its core, the work reflects on the journeys of women in a newly independent nation, quietly yet persistently reshaping ideas of home, identity, and selfhood.
