Forged letter used for additional engg seats
Reva College principal Rana Pratap Reddy accused of forging technology education council's documents; VTU presses for suspension
A fresh controversy has surfaced over forging of documents to get additional BE seats in the management quota pool of engineering colleges. The Reva Institute of Technology and Management (RITM) has been accused by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) of forging its letter to add 60 seats.
Taking the issue seriously, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) executive council has decided to write to RITM asking it to suspend its principal for forging the documents, failing which action will be initiated. VTU VC H Maheshappa said that they have now initiated a university inquiry into the issue, but are allowing the enrolment of students in the current batch.
AICTE shot off a letter to VTU and RITM on July 3, 2014. A copy of the letter available with Bangalore Mirror said that AICTE had permitted RITM an intake of 120 seats in the Computer Science course on May 10, 2012. However, AICTE received an email from the higher education principal secretary that RITM had submitted a copy of a corrigendum letter where the intake was shown as 180.
Upon investigation, it was found that no such corrigendum was issued by AICTE. A show cause notice was issued on August 17, 2012. RITM officials argued that they were not in possession of any corrigendum order for the purpose of increase in intake for BE and they never made any excess admission.
Following this, AICTE initiated an inquiry and decided to set up a standing complaint committee. The RN Bansal committee observed that the action of RITM was very serious and fraudulent in nature."It is clear that the institute fraudulently and with malicious intention forged letters showing enhancement of seats from 120 to 180. Upon examination, RITM principal Dr Rana Patap Reddy admitted creating the above documents. Thus, the institute indulged in forgery to enhance the intake of seats and this effect was admitted by Dr Reddy during his deposition before the committee,"the report said.
Dr Reddy (in the AICTE note) said that he felt sorry for his act and that it was written under wrong advice and misguidance by their liaisoning officer. He further stated that subsequently,'good sense'prevailed upon them and they didn't act on this fake corrigendum which had been generated by them and adhered to seats sanctioned by the AICTE only.
But when Bangalore Mirror contacted Dr Reddy, who is the son-in-law of former VC Balaveera Reddy, for his reaction, he said he had done no wrong."I neither visited AICTE office nor forged any document. I think there is some confusion from the AICTE end and this is the reason why my name has been drawn into this issue,"he said.
