K K Plastic Waste Management Ltd.

Plastic waste can be scientifically reused for asphalting of roads thereby improving roads' performance, durability and quality. which is the founder of an innovative technology of reusing plastic waste in asphalting of roads. This technology not only provides qualitative and durable roads but also solve the plastic menace which is the main catch faced by government while disposing garbage. BACKG

ROUND:

The rapid urbanization and change in life style has a direct impact on the quantum and type of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated. India with 31% of its total population (1.21 billion as on 2011) living in urban areas generates 1.88 lakh tons of MSW daily (TPD) and has witnessed 50% increase in its generation since 2001. In a “business as usual scenario”, urban India will generate 4.4 lakh tons of MSW by 2041. The local bodies are having the challenge to achieve segregation at source/interim level, recycle the valuables (17% of total MSW), treat the organic waste (57% of total MSW) and scientifically dispose the inerts (26% of total MSW) in accordance to the MSW RULES 2000, within the available resources, which are insufficient. The presence of plastics especially the non recyclable plastics is the major nuisance which is hampering the segregation and treatment process of the MSW. It is estimated that approximately 15,000 TPD of plastics waste is generated i.e. 8% of 1.88 TPD of MSW in our country. The practice of open dumping/burning of plastic mixed waste will not only affect the citizen’s health & environment but also significantly contributes to the climate change. It has become essential for the government to look for an innovative ways to recycle and reuse the non recyclable plastics waste. (KKPWM) is providing one of such innovative solution by reusing non recyclable plastics in construction of roads since 2002. We are registered under Company Act 1956 in 2005. We are the only company with an exclusive patented technology of reusing the plastic waste as an additive in construction of roads since 2002. Our technology has been Patented and Certified by the Centre for Transportation Engineering (“CTE”), and the Central Road Research Institute (“CRRI”). The Company has received appreciation in many forums for successfully implementing its technology. The key ones are; a) Government of Karnataka Best Practices Award 2004-05; b) Green Leaf Awards 2009; c) Reliance Real Heroes Award 2008 and; d) Manjushree Awards for Innovation and Excellence, 2009. OUR TECHNOLOGY

The KKPWM have devised an end to end process for collecting all kinds of plastic waste from the garbage, sorting, cleaning and shredding to manufacture flakes called as K K Poly Blend, using exclusively designed machinery for this purpose. The KK Poly Blend is mixed as an additive in 8:100 ratio with the bitumen at 160 degree Celsius, which is then used in laying of roads under our technical assistance. The Central Road Research Institute and Center for Transport Engineering, Bangalore University has certified that the addition of 8% K K Poly Blend to bituminous concrete mix will not only increase the Marshall Stability, flow value and comprehensive strength of bitumen but also increases the values of fatigue life and indirect tensile strength by three times when compared with conventional mix. The use of this technology has enhanced the roads’ durability, efficiency and performance by 100% to that of plastic free roads. This technology not only provides durable and qualitative roads in a city/town but also creates cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens. The waste without plastics is commonly accepted by the farmers who further compost it within their farm land. The KKPWM will be the first company to pay INR 6/kg of plastic waste collected by the retriever/rag pickers which is the main reason for the project’s sustainability. The project will also improve the socio-economic status of the city/town as a large number of employment opportunities will be created. OUR EXPERIENCE IN BANGALORE

Since 2002, KKPWM has laid 2000 km of plastic waste roads using 10000 tons of plastic waste in Bangalore, escaping it from being burnt/land filled. Bangalore, by spending 0.6% more to that of the actual cost of lying of conventional roads, has witnessed the enhanced road life of 5 years when compared to 3 years of plastic free roads, thereby, saving the cost on road capex and maintenance for 2 years. We have got a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) since 2004-05 to till date for collecting plastic waste from city’s garbage and mixing K K Poly Blend (KKPB) in Bitumen while formation of roads at a rate of Rs. 27/kg. We have also established the network with the bulk generators for collecting the plastic waste from the source of its generation within the city. Some of such networked bulk generators are; 1) Mantri Group of apartments; 2) Corporate like 3M and Biocon; 3) NGOs like Waste Wise; and 4) Dry Waste Collection Centers established by BBMP. We accept all types of plastic waste and provide the door step collection facility only for a load of 400 kg and above. The interesting fact is that, we offer Rs. 5-6 per kg of plastic waste depending on its quality.

The morning bells ring and groups of children with school bags on shoulders and polythene bags in hand, line up near the gate. Amidst bouts of giggles and quick steps they enter the campus under a canopy of bamboo grass. This is a typical scene in this unusual school— Akshar, tucked away in the pr...

Today we had a awesome experience to take up follow up drive in Madivala Ward, 172 of BBMP. We along with M/s Sansera Engineering Ltd.; with a total of 19 volunteers accompanied 3 autos in different areas promoting segregation.

Infact no one had followed segregation after 7th June'14 drive....we have told the residents to follow the same today.... however, if defaulted then such mixed waste will not be collected from tomorrow. We have ensured that the autos are having enough sacks to take up segregated waste in a separate manner. The auto drivers separated the waste at the best possible then and there showcasing tad it takes hard time and energy of workers to do it.

With team's hard efforts and participation of Mr. Sheriff, Assistant Engineer, BBMP and Supervisors Mr. Murthy and Mr. Chandrashekar helped us to transfer the segregated wet waste to

Finally.....We take the pride to share that we succeeded to recycle at least one load of auto (500 kg) diverting from Bingipura Dumpyard. We are striving our best to sort the gaps in association with BBMP and build a better and simple system which can work practically.

This efforts will continue tomorrow too. we are still looking out for volunteers who are interested to be a part of such initiative which is helping to keep our environment clean and neat. Interested person may please mail at [email protected].

Have to heard of road recycling??

Yes... road recycling is one of the technology commonly used in developed nation which conserves 30 % of natural resources. Very few companies are now coming forward to take this up in India.

We are happy to share that first recycled road of 500 mt trial run stretch has been laid by us for Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project under World Bank funding. In this road, 100% of scarified aggregates and 2% bitumen has been reused out of the scarified materials. This technology saves 60% energy and reduces Green House Gas emission by 40%. Plastic waste as additive has shown improved strength in roads.

Technical studies has proven its performance equivalent to conventional roads. However, we challenge it as better than the conventional one.

What a significant saving in non renewable natural resources!! Hope with innovative and economical technologies we can conserve nature for our future generations...
