Meet the speakers for the upcoming Publics@IIHS lecture.

Carol Upadhya, Honorary Visiting Professor at National Institute of Advanced Studies, will present her book, Chronicles of a Global City: Speculative Lives and Unsettled Futures. She will be in conversation with Sudeshna Mitra, Associate Dean, IIHS School of Economic Development.

Drawing from the Speculative Urbanism project, the session will unpack how finance capital, real estate, labour, and ecology shape the city. Moving beyond familiar growth narratives of Bengaluru, the discussion will turn to the everyday—tracing aspirations, struggles, and unequal urban transformations across housing, land, labour, and community life.

Pushkara S V, Lead – IIHS Practice, participated in a one-day workshop on Earth Day at Divecha Centre for Climate Change, organised by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Future Earth, and Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI).

At the event, Pushkara spoke about the City-Farmer Partnership, an initiative to strengthen sustainable agriculture with eco-friendly waste management, anchored by IIHS in collaboration with Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), and supported by Godrej Properties Ltd.

He also participated in a panel discussion, titled ‘Towards a Circular Economy: The Way Forward for Sustainable Waste Management‘, with experts in sustainable development and environmental management.

The workshop was attended by government stakeholders and technical experts from the fields of ecology, environment, energy and sustainability to facilitate cross-disciplinary learning on waste management and circular economy, with due focus on soil health and its linkages with food security and urban systems.

As Earth Day brings focus to how we use natural resources, water management in cities is increasingly critical. High Performance Buildings (HPBs) address this through a host of on-site interventions.

Through technical assistance and capacity development, ASSURE is supporting building and real estate sector stakeholders in adopting sustainable approaches to build water-efficient, future-ready assets.
To explore how HPBs can reduce water demand and enable optimised building systems, visit http://factor4assure.iihs.co.in/ or write to [email protected] to schedule a meeting.

Earth Day 2026 celebrates the contributions made by communities, at the grassroots. Sustaining these efforts relies, in part, on how knowledge is created and shared in everyday contexts.

‘Shaping Urban Futures’, is an online course that aims to demonstrate how complementary research projects have applied the PEAK Urban framework—Prediction, Emergence, Adoption and Knowledge—to uncover interrelated issues of health, climate change, migration and informality in places that will face the biggest challenges from rapid unplanned urbanisation.

The course is suitable for all urban scholars—from early career researchers to veteran urbanists, and everyone in between.

This flexible, self-paced course is offered by IIHS Digital Blended Learning (DBL), your go-to source for knowledge on the urban.

What happens when borders shape not just nations, but everyday lives?

IIHS Screens is back this April with award winning documentary Borderlands. Directed by Samarth Mahajan, the film follows the lives of six characters defined by personal and political borders, across the Indian subcontinent. Through conversations and observations, the film traces how each character navigates uncertainty in search of meaning in a world beyond their control. Divided families meet, love blossoms across borders, and traffickers get caught

Join the post-screening online discussion between Samarth Mahajan and Sooraj M. Raveendran, Senior Consultant, IIHS Urban Informatics Lab, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Effective urban water management depends on understanding the full system: supply, use and reuse, governance, and local capacity. Grounded assessment is essential to building resilient, efficient, and context-responsive urban water systems.

IIHS is partnering with the Chikkaballapur district administration and urban local bodies on a new initiative to assess urban water conditions and support sustainable water management across six towns in the district.

The CDRI-funded project, ‘Building Small Town Water Resilience’, marks the start of a structured, systems-based approach to urban water management in Chikkaballapur.

Recent coverage in The Hindu and Prajavani reflects the wider public importance of this work.

As Indian cities struggle to plan for heat, the most vulnerable suffer.
Heat is not equally distributed. Over the past two decades, recorded deaths have ranged from 10,500 to 20,600—yet official figures exclude heat-exacerbated conditions, suggesting the true toll is far higher. Meanwhile, informal settlements that house nearly 30 per cent of Delhi's population occupy less than 1 per cent of the city's land. When heatwaves hit, these communities face the greatest risk, yet remain absent from planning data.

Research shows that caste, religion, and class cluster in heat-vulnerable areas. Yet planning frameworks that shape urban development remain silent on this reality.

Cities can be planned differently. But first, the vulnerable must be visible—and centred—in data, planning, and policy.

Rashee Mehra, Consultant, IIHS Research, shared insights drawing from her recent work for the If Cities Could Speak project, supported by Wellcome Trust.

How do cities really work?
What does ‘urban’ really mean?

For Subhay Baberwal, Senior Associate - IIHS Academic Outreach, these questions shaped ‘City Walks for Youth’. The idea was to look beyond plans and postcards, and see cities as everyday negotiations — on pavements, in neighbourhoods, and along riverbanks.

While walking across three cities — Kolkata, Jaipur and Delhi, one thread remained: the systems we build and the habits we normalise shape heritage, economy, ecology, and identity in ways we rarely pause to examine.

The IIHS City Walks will be back. We hope to see many new faces, so watch this space.

IIHS is delighted to welcome Carol Upadhya, Honorary Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, for a talk on the book, ‘Chronicles of a Global City: Speculative Lives and Unsettled Futures’. Carol will be in conversation with Sudeshna Mitra, Associate Dean - IIHS School of Economic Development, presenting key insights from the volume and the project, ‘Speculative Urbanism’, on which the book was based.

The talk will explore how finance capital, real estate, labour, and ecology shape the city through the lives of those who build, service, inhabit, and speculate within it. Moving beyond familiar narratives of Bengaluru’s growth, the discussion will examine the city through the lens of the everyday—tracing aspirations, struggles, and unequal urban transformations across housing, labour, land, and community life.
