Hello!

The dates for the second Ramaiah Round Robin are confirmed and the tournament will take place on the 7th and 8th of March, 2020.

As mentioned in the previous post, the tournament will be invitational. Here's how invitations will be sent out (there's quite a bit, please do read though):

Teams:

Round 1:
In this round, the Finalists of all the major BP tournaments that took place from August to November, 2019 will be invited. Those invited in this round will have until 10th January, 2020 to confirm their participation in the tournament.

Round 2:
In this round, subject to availability, slots will be offered to the Semi Finalists of the same Tournaments. Those invited in this round will have till 30th January 2020 to confirm their participation in the tournament.

Round 3:
If you haven't been in the Finals or Semi Finals of any of the tournaments in the given time period, but are still interested in participating in the Ramaiah Round Robin, you can apply for a slot by registering here: https://forms.gle/DJEkiK327sGnPcwJ7.

The slots available as of 30th January will be offered to teams that have registered in the above form. The order in which the slots will be offered in this round will be determined by the cumulative credentials of the team members (the achievements do not have to be recent).

Adjudicators:

Ramaiah Round Robin will follow the HWS Round Robin Model and have two independent panels of 3 judges in every room in the in rounds. The tournament will guarantee a stellar CA panel consistenting of 4 individuals and will also invite 4 adjudicators to ensure quality adjudication.

16 more adjudicators will be invited based on applications for slots, like in the 3rd Round of invitations for teams. Interested adjudicators may apply here: https://forms.gle/vhQweQdhKirmJ4H18

The order in which the slots will be offered will be determined based on the achievements of the applicants.

All invitations are subject the discretion of the Organizing Body.

Registration Fee:

We understand that when invited, one should not be expected to pay. However, doing so would mean that we would not have sufficient funds to run a comfortable tournament and award reasonable cash prizes. Hence, to balance both of these interests, we will be charging a very nominal reg fee of:
Rs. 1,000/- without accommodation
Rs. 1,500/- with accommodation

If you have any queries regarding the invitations or otherwise, please do feel free to contact:
1. Sathvik Amarnath - 9945036284

TAB UPDATE: RIV this year will be following the system that was used at ABP 2018, where teams are assigned a random word as their team code.

To make tabbing more efficient and to run an environment friendly tournament the tournament will be using private links to facilitate online data entry.

Attached is the individual registration form that will provide the tab team all the details we need to make all this happen.
We request the participants to enter the details accurately in the form in order to ensure the smooth functioning of this tournament and access to the correct ballot submission URLs.

One person from each team and every adjudicator needs to fill this form.

Hello!

Here's the schedule for this year's Ramaiah Inter Varsity. Do note that this is a 2 day Tournament and hence, it's important that we stay on schedule, given that we can't debate late into the night due to campus rules. So please do help us stick to this schedule by being punctual.

For those booking flights, we would advice you to keep a buffer of at least 3 hours between the end of the tournament and the scheduled departure of your flight.

Core Adjudicator 3: Bharath Gururagavendran

Here's what Jonathan Bhavanasi and Kiran Suryanarayan have to say about him:

The pivotal moment in Bharath’s debating career almost happened to be his first , way back in 2015 our intrepid hero decided to bookend a rather passionate speech with an "impromptu" ballerina twirl (albeit a rather graceless one) , some would argue that he peaked then and there and for the most part they'd be right. It goes without saying that we lost the round, crashing out of the tournament in (tragically) spectacular fashion, important lessons were learnt that day, namely that (a) Bharath couldn't dance to save his life and (b) debating was hard. I expected Bharath to give up and return to Munning post that fiasco and to no surprise he did, only to make a return several years later fuelled by a heady diet of waffles, cheesecake, rasam and romantic comedies.

His career's seen a bit of an uptick since then, making it to five finals (winning three) and desperately seeking the validation he craves by attempting to win teams over with debate feedback in his capacity as an adjudicator (surprisingly enough he turned out half decent at that as well). Bharath’s an individual who I can truly say is obsessed with debating, constantly reliving rounds long past their expiry date and actively hunting for new and innovative ways to make complex, layered arguments seem annoyingly easy to make.

He spends what little time he has to himself constantly engaged in critical self-reflection bordering on the abusive in order to ensure that he can finally overcome his annoying habit of declaring the debate lost just because the judge wrote down precisely 24 words lesser during his speech than his opponent’s. Needless to say, you'll be getting quality motions and will hopefully benefit from his feedback and vast experience. And jokes aside, he is probably the best Prime Minister we’ve seen in the past few years and you are likely to learn from his deep and insightful understanding of case construction and analysis.

Here are some of his achievements:

Winner of MSRMPD 2018 and 2nd Best Speaker
Winner of GNLU Parliamentary Debate and 5th Best Speaker
Winner of MITDT 2019 and top 10 speaker
Finalist at RVCE PD 2018
Finalist at VITDT 2018 (Invitational Round Robin) and 3rd Best Speaker
Semi Finalist at SLS PD 2018
Semi Finalist at IITB Bombay PD 2018 and 7th Best Speaker
Broke 2nd on tabs at CUPD 2019 (non-competitive) and Best Speaker (non-Competitive)

International Achievements:
Open Octofinalist SMU Hammers 2019 and Top 20 Speaker
Top 50 Speaker at UADC Vietnam

Core Adjudicator 2: Piali Bopanna

Here's what Advesh Jalan has to say about her:

All too often in these adj core posts, we read about rags to riches stories. People who struggled for years to break at tournaments, and finally became good enough to be core adjudicators through sheer tenacity. Inspiring as these stories are, it isn't Piali's story.

Soon into her first year, people knew she was going to be good. She worked immensely hard, she "got" debates and most importantly, she didn't care who her opponent was. This is a quality that often goes unappreciated but is so very important. She refused to let the experienced folk fly with the assumptions in their arguments, something we tend to do a lot since "how can THAT person be wrong?" It has been absolutely instrumental in the debater Piali has become today, to the extent that if you told her she was debating a team with Shengwu Li, she'd say "I think we can take them", without a moment's hesitation.

One of my favourite memories of Piali's debating career is from her (and her teammate Vasundhara's) run at last year's ABP. It's the the end of day 1 and they're not doing too well with 4 points at the end of 3 rounds. They would need at least 8 of the possible 9 points from the next day to break. Now it just so happened that their third round was recorded, in which they had unfortunately taken a 4th. In a situation where most people would be too dejected to care, Piali asks me to watch the debate and give them pointers going into the next day. That's Piali for you, a fearless person with an unending desire to learn and improve. It's hardly any wonder that she's among the best. Anyway, what happened next was nothing short of magical. They went on to win every single round the next day and break among the top 16 teams in Asia, finally ending their run at the quarter finals of the tournament.

Piali has a reputation for being a ferocious first speaker who covers enough matter for the whole debate right at the start. Legend says she sold her emotions to her robotic overlords in order to achieve this. Yet, I can't think of anything more important for an adj core than to have the vision to foresee the end of the debate when you read a motion.

These days, Piali spends her time giving back to the circuit. Coaching kids back at her school, and spending a majority of her weekends doing the arduous job of adj coring tournaments. She perfectly embodies the spirit of The RV Debating Society. Piali is "debating, at its finest".

Here are some of her achievements:

Core Adjudicator 1: Abhishek Nevatia

Here's what Mayank Chari has to say about him:

Having debated and cored previously with Abhisek, my experiences with him have been beyond pleasurable. He has a vast and curious mind, a conversational yet insightful ability to communicate, and a patient and respectful attitude towards listening. Yet, these qualities don’t begin to describe him as a debater and core-adjudicator. He is at heart, an Artist.

Perhaps one of the toughest questions in Philosophy, is having to define what constitutes art. Is art merely strokes of color on a canvas? Is it just a fine-tuned melody? Or is it a tool- finding value in protest? It can’t possibly be the first two and the romantics of the world would shudder if it were the third. So, what if art were nothing? What if art were just freedom? Not having a form, a definition, just existing for itself in abstraction. It would be a convenient proposition. No haggling on definitions- Instead, we all could spend our time on more meaningful things like enjoying art. Before I met Abhishek, I strongly thought it was. I thought great speeches were those which were given from the heart and needn’t have the pretense of being ‘regulated’ by conventions of structure and method. Hence, for me those who tried were unfortunately just following a fad or were aping words like ‘Counter-Factual’ or ‘Discourse’.

But again, this was before I met him. Seeing Abhishek debate, one sees the beauty of consistency. His speeches are a composite mixture of elaborate and deep-seated principles, and a galore of extensions and rebuttals- all wrapped neatly in seven minutes and twenty seconds of organized efficiency. His art- his speeches, bring out the best of a lawyer, who compartmentalizes the motion in clear and discernable boundaries. His mind- that of an artist, gives his ideas room to run fast and far. It seems paradoxical at first, how can someone so invested in his ideas show the restraint of structure? But it all comes to light when one sits down to make motions with the bloke. One realises that the restraint is a necessity because man does this guy have ideas. Abhishek is very well read, his motion ideas come from a wide range of themes which have been cultivated by a dedicated effort to know more. Always willing to teach, learn and engage with the unheard, just the way he wraps his speeches in well crafted structure, he wraps his conversations in a neatly tied bow of decency. There is a rumour about Abhishek that he once gave a final’s speech and got a standing ovation only to lose the debate and I find such stories hilarious. Not because something like seems impossible- but because they reflect the best of him. A carefree artist whose goal is to give a speech worthy of applause. What happens next is even better but doesn’t concern him much, because such debates are remembered as those that he lost and not as ones that someone else won.

There are of course, downsides to this- he’s self-admittedly slow in replying to messages and will get lost in his ideas from time to time but these are small crimes for an Artist. Maybe, he’s working on his next masterpiece? Only one way to find out!

Here are some of his achievements:

1. FTD 37, 2019
