What stories of systems do small and medium towns tell?

From planning and people to everyday infrastructures and lived urbanisation, our Master’s students travelled across towns in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to observe, analyse, and understand how places actually work.

Through fieldwork, conversations, and close attention to the ordinary, they traced how systems intersect—often in ways that don’t show up on maps or plans.

This is interdisciplinary, practice-integrated learning in action.

Does this way of learning interest you?

What does it mean to build responsibly in a warming world?

As India adds nearly a billion sq. ft of built space each year, the question is no longer whether we build, but how. IIHS Library’s ongoing exhibition, Build Less. Build Smart., brings together books and ideas that rethink architecture through sustainability, resilience, and care, from energy efficiency and passive design to material innovation and climate-responsive case studies.

Curated for the IIHS Library by the IIHS Sustainable Energy Lab, the exhibition invites people to reflect on how the built environment can respond to planetary limits.

📚 On view till 24 December
