They called her the “Encyclopaedia of the Forest” because she could recognise the mother-tree of any species, simply by touch. Born into the tribal Halakki Vokkaliga community in a small village in Karnataka, Tulsi Gowda never had a formal classroom, but the forest was her school, and nature her teacher.
At 12, planting and nurturing saplings became her calling. Over six decades, she has planted and cared for tens of thousands of trees. Some sources credit her with over 30,000 saplings, and others note she helped regenerate entire forests across reserves and sanctuaries in Karnataka.
Her work wasn’t just about planting trees. She used innate knowledge to collect seeds at the right time, nurture saplings, and guard against poachers and forest fires, all without textbooks or degrees, but with fierce love for her land. In 2021, the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri — a recognition for a lifetime of silent, steadfast service to the Earth.
