Indian Institute of Astrophysics The official page of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), located in Koramangala, Bengaluru. A 1.3 m telescope named after Prof. J. C.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics traces its origin to William Petrie, an enlightened officer of the East India Company, who in 1786 began observations of the meridian transit of stars from Madras, mainly for maritime purposes. This in a short period of ten years, blossomed into the Madras Observatory. The Madras Observatory, especially under the leadership of N.R. Pogson, made tremendous progr

ess, diversifying its focus to the astronomical studies of planets, asteroids, the sun, solar eclipses and variable stars. Teams from the Observatory were among the first to observe the Helium line at the solar eclipse in 1868, visible from Guntur in South India. Around the end of the 19th century, the Madras Observatory was shifted to Kodaikanal. The Kodaikanal Observatory became famous in
its own right with pioneering contributions such
as the Evershed Effect discovered in 1909. The
work at Kodaikanal continues without any break
even today and the observatory holds an archive of spectroheliograms which are recorded daily. In 1971, the organization became an autonomous academic institution devoted to astronomy, astrophysics and allied topics, under the directorship of Professor M.K.Vainu Bappu. It is now a premier Institute in the country specialized in Astrophysics and it is fully funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Several new major facilities have been added
during the last four and half decades. They include: the 2.34 m Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) at Kavalur, the 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) at Hanle and the Radio Heliograph at Gauribidanur. Recent initiatives at Hanle include: commissioning of a High Altitude Gamma Ray (HAGAR) telescope array and setting up of a Major Atmospheric Cerenkov Experiment (MACE) telescope by BARC jointly with TIFR and IIA. Bhattacharyya was installed at Kavalur and commissioned in 2014. The Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) system, developed by the Institute jointly with national laboratories, was calibrated in a specially established facility, the M.G.K.Menon Laboratory, at the Institute’s campus in Hosakote. The system is
integrated on to the ASTROSAT satellite which is put into the orbit by ISRO on 28 September, 2015.

The Hon'ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, Dr. Jitendra Singh, visited the Indian Institute of Astrophysics on 28th April to lay the foundation stone of the "MKV Bappu Bhavana" building at the Institute’s campus in Bengaluru. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Dr. S. Somanath, Chairperson of the Governing Council of IIA & Former Secretary of the Department of Space, and other dignitaries.

The new building will be aptly named in honour of Prof. Manali Kallat Vainu Bappu, the founding Director of IIA and a pioneer of modern Indian optical astronomy. Prof. Bappu served as the Director of IIA until 1982 and was President of the International Astronomical Union, as well as a recipient of the Padma Bhushan.

The Hon’ble Minister also inaugurated the Aspheric Grinder & Polisher at the Optics Lab, inspected the mirror roundels and Segment Support Assemblies for the Thirty Meter Telescope project, following which, he visited the Payload Operations Centre (POC) which receives data from the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board AstroSat, and the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) on board Aditya-L1.

The Hon'ble Minister and Dr S. Somanath addressed the staff of IIA following a presentation by the Director IIA on the Institute's history, current research, and future projects. These include the National Large Solar Telescope, National Large Optical-IR Telescope, Upgraded Himalayan Chandra Telescope, and COSMOS-2 planetarium.
