Report on District-Level Inter-College Elocution Contest on Road Safety Awareness

A District-Level Inter-College Elocution Contest on Road Safety Awareness under the theme “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha” was successfully organized by the NSS Units in collaboration with the Road Safety Club of the college on 16/03/2026. The programme was held under the guidance of worthy principal Prof. Neelofar Bhat.The programme aimed to create awareness among students about the importance of road safety, responsible driving, and adherence to traffic rules in order to reduce road accidents and save precious human lives. The session was moderated by Dr. Mohammad Sideeq Rather, NSS Programme Officer, who highlighted the objectives and significance of organizing such awareness programmes.

In his remarks, he emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility and that young students can play a crucial role in spreading awareness within society. He stressed that negligence, over-speeding, and lack of adherence to traffic regulations are among the major causes of road accidents, and therefore awareness and responsible behaviour on roads are essential. The programme began with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Sadat Hassan Kar, Dean Science, who warmly welcomed the participants, faculty members, and guests. In his address, he emphasized the growing need for road safety awareness in the present time and encouraged students to act as responsible citizens by strictly following traffic rules and motivating others to do the same. He appreciated the efforts of the NSS Units and the Road Safety Club for organizing such an important and meaningful event.

The elocution contest witnessed enthusiastic participation from students representing different colleges of the district. Around 60 students participated in the competition and delivered insightful speeches highlighting various aspects of road safety, including the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, maintaining speed limits, and promoting responsible behaviour on roads. The participants also emphasized the role of youth in spreading awareness about road safety in society.

The contest provided an excellent platform for students to express their ideas, perspectives, and concerns regarding road safety issues. The participants impressed the audience and the judges with their confidence, knowledge, and eloquence while speaking on the theme “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha.” After a keenly contested competition, Simran Deep Kour from GDC Baramulla secured the first position for her outstanding speech and presentation on the theme. Her speech was highly appreciated for its clarity, relevance, and impactful message regarding road safety awareness. The first three position holders were felicitated with certificates and mementos in recognition of their outstanding performance in the competition. The overall arrangements for the programme were meticulously made by the NSS Programme Officers, Aaliya Akhtar, Dr. Mohammad Siddiq, and Dr. Mohammad Ishfaq Ahmad, whose dedicated efforts ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the event.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Ishfaq Ahmad, NSS Programme Officer, who expressed gratitude to the Principal, organizers, faculty members, judges, and participants for their valuable contribution and cooperation in making the event successful. He also appreciated the enthusiasm shown by the students and encouraged them to continue participating in such awareness programmes in the future. The event ended on a positive note with a strong message highlighting the importance of road safety awareness and the need for collective efforts to m8ake roads safer for everyone

Around 35 students of Government Degree College Baramulla participated in the Mega Job Fair organized by the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) Srinagar on 16 March 2026 at its Rangreth campus under the project “Skill Development for Digital J&K and Ladakh.”

These students had earlier successfully completed Artificial Intelligence -Upskilling Programme (270 hours) conducted at the college. During the event, the students appeared in several interviews and a number of them were offered job opportunities.

Principal GDC Baramulla, Prof. (Dr.) Nilofar Akhtar expressed satisfaction over the successful conduct of the training programme and appreciated the placement opportunities generated for the students through the initiative.

The participation proved to be a valuable and enriching experience, providing students with practical exposure to the recruitment process and enhancing their confidence and employability.

Baramulla, Feb 18:A warm and dignified superannuation function was organized by the Staff Council of Government Degree College Baramulla to honour the retirement of the Principal, Prof. Mohammad Shafi Lone, in recognition of his dedicated services to the institution. Prof. Lone is superannuating on 28th of Feb, 2026. The event was attended by Principals of various Government Degree Colleges, former Principals, senior faculty members, colleagues from different institutions, and the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college.

On the occasion, Prof. Tariq Chalkoo, Staff Secretary, presented a detailed account of Prof. Lone’s life journey and his contributions to the institution. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr. Aaliya Akhtar, Assistant Professor, Psychology.

Among those who attended and spoke on the occasion included Dr. Shamim Ahmad Dar, Principal GDC Sogam; Dr. Neelofar Bhat, Principal GCW Baramulla; Dr. Mohammad Farooq Rather, former Principal; Dr. Abdul Majeed Dar; Dr. Farooq Ahmad; Dr. Farooq Faizan, Principal School Education; Mr. Sajad Ahmad Shah; Prof. Bashir Ahmad Principal GDC Sopore; Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Lone, former Principal; Mr. Mehraj-ud-Din Khanday, former Professor; Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, former Principal; Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Lone, former Principal; Prof. Abdul Majeed Chalkoo, Principal GDC Uri, Prof. Syed Rahmat Shah, Principal GDC Boniyar and Advocate Abdul Rashid Lone. The speakers highlighted Prof. Lone’s academic leadership, administrative excellence, and his significant contributions to the growth and development of the institution.

In his address, Prof. Lone expressed gratitude to the staff and college fraternity for their cooperation during his tenure and extended his best wishes for the continued progress of the institution. The programme concluded with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Syed Mutahar Aaqib, Coordinator IQAC.

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 🏅

Dr. Humaira Qadri, Associate Professor, Environmental Science, GDC (Autonomous), Baramulla (Sole Inventor and Patentee) has been granted an Indian Patent (Patent No. 580782) by the The Patent Office, Government of India for invention titled “Biofertiliser Composition from Aquatic Weeds.”

The patent has been granted under the provisions of the Patents Act, 1970 for a term of 20 years from 31st March 2023, with the official date of grant being 16th February 2026. As an individual inventor and patent holder, this achievement represents years of research, perseverance, and commitment to ecological solutions.
