Four-Day Educational Tour to Henry Island

The educational excursion of the B.Sc. Zoology Honours students of Bhairab Ganguly College to Henry Island (South 24 Parganas, West Bengal) from 8th to 11th December 2025 was a highly enriching academic experience, combining field-based learning with ecological exploration. The team resided at the Sundari Tourist Complex, managed by the West Bengal State Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., and conducted systematic studies on local biodiversity and environmental parameters.

Twenty-three Semester III and Semester V students pursuing the B.Sc. (Hons.) program with Zoology (Major) actively participated in the educational tour, accompanied by faculty members and non-teaching staff from the Zoology department.

Henry Island is a serene coastal destination near Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The island is part of the Sundarbans delta and is known for its mangrove forests, virgin beaches, and rich biodiversity. It was developed as an eco-tourism site by the West Bengal Fisheries Department in the 1980s.

The excursion was designed to integrate classroom knowledge with practical fieldwork. Students engaged in the following activities:

- Study of Local Flora and Fauna
- Assessment of Various Aquatic Parameters in the Large Water Bodies Maintained by the State Fisheries Department.
- Study of Zooplankton Diversity
- Study of Nocturnal Insect Diversity
- Crab Population Studies

The Department of Zoology organized a one-day educational tour on 12th February 2026, during which 27 students of B.Sc. Honours (NEP Semester I; Zoology Major), accompanied by three faculty members and one non-teaching staff, visited the 12th Kolkata International Poultry Fair at Newtown.

During the visit, participants observed a wide range of activities, including exhibitions of different poultry breeds, demonstrations on modern rearing techniques, and discussions on the importance of poultry rearing, feed management, disease control, and vaccination. They also gained insights into the present scenario of meat and egg demand across various states of India. In addition, the students were exposed to poultry equipment such as incubators, brooders, feeders, and drinkers, while engaging in meaningful interactions with experts and industry representatives.

The tour provided students with a practical understanding of poultry biology and management, along with valuable insights into the challenges of poultry farming, particularly in relation to diseases, biosecurity, and sustainability. They also learned about innovations in feed, housing, and breeding practices. The experience reinforced the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical exposure.

This educational visit highlighted the significance of bridging academic learning with real-world applications. It also offered students glimpses of future opportunities in research, career prospects in poultry science, and entrepreneurship in poultry farming.

A skill development workshop on "Aquarium Management" is going to be organized by Department of Fishery Science, Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College, Kolkata on 2nd July, 2025 at Dr. Hiralal Chaudhuri Laboratory for sixth semester students of Department of Zoology, Bhairab Ganguly College, Kolkata. This workshop has been planned to fulfill one of their curricular topics.

Glimpses of Special Guest Lecture by Dr. Dola Roy, (Scientist B, Paleozoology Division, ZSI), Invited Special Lecture by Dr. Avisek Banerjee, (Assistant Professor & Head, Dept. of Zoology, RKMV Belur) and Departmental Students' Seminar (Involving Sem I, III and VI Zoology Hons.students) organized by the Department of Zoology, BGC today.
We all enjoyed the day long academic events successfully conducted by the students, staff and faculties of our department. 💐
