Four-Day Educational Tour to Henry Island
The educational excursion of the B.Sc. Zoology Honours students of Bhairab Ganguly College to Henry Island (South 24 Parganas, West Bengal) from 8th to 11th December 2025 was a highly enriching academic experience, combining field-based learning with ecological exploration. The team resided at the Sundari Tourist Complex, managed by the West Bengal State Fisheries Development Corporation Ltd., and conducted systematic studies on local biodiversity and environmental parameters.
Twenty-three Semester III and Semester V students pursuing the B.Sc. (Hons.) program with Zoology (Major) actively participated in the educational tour, accompanied by faculty members and non-teaching staff from the Zoology department.
Henry Island is a serene coastal destination near Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The island is part of the Sundarbans delta and is known for its mangrove forests, virgin beaches, and rich biodiversity. It was developed as an eco-tourism site by the West Bengal Fisheries Department in the 1980s.
The excursion was designed to integrate classroom knowledge with practical fieldwork. Students engaged in the following activities:
- Study of Local Flora and Fauna
- Assessment of Various Aquatic Parameters in the Large Water Bodies Maintained by the State Fisheries Department.
- Study of Zooplankton Diversity
- Study of Nocturnal Insect Diversity
- Crab Population Studies
