Garima Shrivastava, a Research Scholar in Psychology, Department of Liberal Arts, IIT Bhilai, has recently published a paper co-authored with her supervisor Dr. Anindita Ghosh, Faculty Member, Department of Liberal Arts, IIT Bhilai. The paper titled “Gender Dysphoria and Effects of Gender-Affirming Medical Care on Mental Health of Transgender Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-synthesis” has been published in the International Journal of Transgender Health. The findings highlighted that transgender people experiencing gender dysphoria face a decline in mental health and suffer mental health issues. Moreover, transgender individuals accessing gender-affirming medical care (GAMC) reported positive mental health outcomes and a reduction in symptoms of gender dysphoria. However, rare instances of regret and ambivalent feelings about the outcomes of GAMC were also reported. The study provided potential insights on proximal and distal psychosocial factors which are important in order to ensure maximum benefits from GAMC procedures and managing stress caused by gender dysphoria. Recommendations have been provided to develop a tool for making an informed decision before commencing GAMC. The outcomes are relevant to mental health practitioners, transgender healthcare providers, and policymakers exclusively for the transgender population.
