🌍 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵’𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆!
A landmark study from IISER Bhopal, titled “Petrochronological constraints on Eoarchean subduction: Evidence from the southwest Bastar Craton, India,” and led by Prof. Pritam Nasipuri, has been accepted in the journal Geoscience Frontiers. Dr Kaushik Satpathi, the first author of the paper recently graduated from IISER Bhopal and won the Best Thesis Award at the 2026 Convocation.
The study provides evidence that subduction and nascent plate tectonics were operating more than 3.6 billion years ago.
The research identifies a ~3.65-billion-year-old anatectic gneiss, the oldest preserved rock reported from the Indian landmass, and documents ~3.64–3.60-billion-year-old magmatic charnockites, the oldest known magmatic charnockites.
The findings show that subduction and plate tectonics were already operating during the earliest stabilisation of the Earth, unlike on Mars or Venus.
