As the evening sun dips low over the IISER Bhopal campus, everything turns into a sea of gold 🧡✨. The bright, fiery hues of deep orange and red across the horizon 🌇 show the true, dramatic beauty of a hot summer evening here in Bhauri. From the above, one can see the long road stretching toward the horizon, passing right by the blue basketball courts 🏀 and quiet hostels 🏬. Down on the ground, the sunlight peeks through the palm trees while their dark silhouettes 🍂 perfectly frame the sky.

As the intense heat of the day slowly fades, a calm energy takes over the campus. It is a special moment where the busy life 🧑💻 of labs, libraries, and classrooms finally slows down. Students walking back from lectures and researchers stepping away from their experiments stop for a moment just to look up and enjoy the view. 💛

These quiet scenes at the end of the day remind us that our campus is not just a place for hard work and intense science, but also a home where nature 🍃 and learning live together. 🤍 As the sun disappears and another productive day comes to a close, this golden glow gives our community a peaceful space to relax, think, and prepare for the day to come. 🌅✨

We are pleased to share that research by Dr. Tista Mukherjee, Department of Economic Sciences, IISER Bhopal, along with collaborators, has been featured as an opinion article in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘦.

Titled “𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴: 𝘚𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘴”, the piece offers a nuanced perspective on son preference in India, extending beyond cultural and economic explanations.

The article highlights how perceptions of safety in public spaces shape household decisions, arguing that when everyday environments are perceived as unsafe, families respond to risk by adjusting mobility, education, and even reproductive choices for daughters. Evidence from Indian cities indicates that a majority of young women experience sexual harassment in neighbourhood spaces, making safety a persistent constraint in daily life.

The research further discusses empirical findings showing that changes in perceived safety are associated with shifts in son preference and fertility behaviour, underscoring how public safety concerns can influence private household decisions.

We congratulate the authors for this important contribution to policy-relevant research on gender, safety, and demographic behaviour.
