Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our ETO and Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) cadets recently visited Gopalpur Port, gaining valuable first hand exposure to the practical aspects of port and ship operations.

The visit provided cadets with an opportunity to understand:
⚙️ Ship machinery, systems and equipment
🧭 Navigation and bridge operations
⚓ Port operations, logistics and safety practices
👨‍✈️ Coordination between ship crew and port authorities

Ship visit brings cadets closer to understanding the industry, building professional confidence, and preparing for a successful career at sea.

The School of Maritime Studies proudly celebrated World Maritime Day 2026 with enthusiastic participation from cadets and faculty members.

Aligned with the IMO theme for 2026–2027 “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” the celebration highlighted how maritime policies, regulations and professional standards translate into responsible action across the maritime sector.

Through competitions, cultural activities and studentled engagements, cadets showcased teamwork, leadership, communication, creativity and confidence essential qualities for the seafarers of tomorrow.

What keeps a vessel stable when its cargo condition changes?

Ballast water plays an important role in maintaining a ship’s stability, trim and draft.

Ballasting and deballasting are essential shipboard operations carried out according to the vessel’s loading condition and operational requirements.

• Ballasting: Taking seawater into designated ballast tanks to maintain the required stability, trim and draft.

• Deballasting: Discharging ballast water from the vessel when ballast is no longer required or when the vessel’s loading condition changes.

• Why it matters: Proper ballast management supports safe navigation, vessel stability and efficient ship operations.

Ballast water management also has an environmental responsibility. Ships follow ballast water management procedures to reduce the risk of transferring harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens between different marine environments.

Working aloft on a ship can be dangerous. One wrong step can lead to a serious fall. That’s why a safety harness and lifeline are essential when working at height.

Here’s what makes them important:

⚓ D-Ring: Helps secure the harness properly.
⚡ Shock Absorber: Reduces the impact of a fall.
🪝 Snap Hooks:Keep the lifeline securely attached.
🧵 Strong Webbing:Built to handle heavy loads and tough marine conditions.

Safety Tip: Always inspect your harness, lifeline, hooks and webbing before use. Look for fraying, rust, cracks or any signs of damage.

Remember: Stay secured and maintain 100% tie-off when required.
