I’m writing this post on behalf of an ITER Alumni's relative, as she has been going through an extremely difficult time, staying in hospitals since August while caring for her mother who has been diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. This journey has been emotionally heartbreaking and financially overwhelming for her.
How It Started
Early this year, her mother complained of stomach discomfort. Initial consultations suggested gastric issues. In April, an ERCP was done, but her pain worsened by July, leading to multiple admissions and diagnostic tests: ERCP, Biopsy, MRCP, CT Scan, PET/CT Scan
All reports appeared normal except the biopsy, which showed suspicion of malignancy. Since the other scans didn’t clearly indicate cancer, doctors assumed it was infection in the bile duct and thickening at the gallbladder neck, so they proceeded with treatment accordingly. She underwent three stenting procedures, yet infection and fever persisted.
Later, she took her to one of India’s leading gastro hospitals. After further evaluations, doctors confirmed gallbladder cancer. A major surgery (Right Hepatectomy + Hepatico Jejunostomy) was planned, but during the procedure they discovered that the cancer had already spread to the stomach and intestines, making the operation too risky.
The next plan was to insert a metallic stent and start chemotherapy, but the bile duct was too narrow, so plastic stents were placed again. She continues to get fever (101–103°F) daily, and chemotherapy cannot begin until the infection is controlled.
Currently, she is on antibiotics costing around ₹25,000 per day, adding huge financial pressure.
Adding to the emotional burden — she has only one daughter, and her husband passed away three years ago, so the entire responsibility has fallen on her.
💰 Financial Situation
So far, the she has spent around ₹15.2 Lakhs, including ₹2.8 Lakhs only for diagnosis.
Doctors have given a chemo plan estimated at ₹14 Lakhs, apart from ongoing daily medicines, hospital stay, and tests.
She is trying everything within her power — but now she needs help to continue her mother’s treatment.
