Government Engineering College Bikaner takes immense pride in the remarkable achievement of its distinguished alumnus Mr. Pushpendra Rajpurohit, currently a Research Scholar at IIT Delhi. Under the guidance of Dr. Mani Ram Saharan, Scientist at CSIR, and in collaboration with their dedicated team, he has successfully developed an innovative, cost-effective, and impactful life-saving system named “DISHA (Directional Illuminated Support under Harsh Ambience)”, for which a patent has been granted to CSIR. This invention offers an intelligent, reliable, and novel navigational aid to ensure safe egress during emergency situations in confined and hazardous workplaces.
DISHA has been specifically designed for distress scenarios involving chaos, extremely poor visibility, smoke, dust, or toxic gases, where human decision-making abilities are severely compromised. The system intelligently integrates three vital human senses—vision, hearing, and touch—to enhance survival chances. It incorporates laser light technology and an audible alarm system, both housed within a self-illuminating, fire-resistant, electrically safe, and lightweight cone-shaped structure, making it highly dependable even in the harshest environments.
The DISHA system can be installed along exit routes at waist height, enabling trapped personnel to determine the correct escape direction through touch, even in total darkness or dense smoke. The laser lights provide clear visual guidance, while the audible alarm alerts nearby personnel, encouraging assistance, coordination, and collective evacuation. This not only improves safe egress but also reduces the fear of isolation during emergencies and enhances the likelihood of group-based evacuation strategies.
Another key strength of this invention lies in its simplicity, affordability, low maintenance requirements, and non-interference with normal workplace operations. Regular exposure to the system also helps train personnel for improved emergency behavior during routine operations.
Mr. Pushpendra Singh Rajpurohit’s contribution stands as an outstanding example of technical excellence, innovation, and social responsibility. The department and the institution are proud of such an accomplished alumnus who has transformed knowledge and research into a meaningful innovation dedicated to saving human lives. We extend our best wishes for his continued success and future contributions to socially relevant research.
