Indian Maritime University was featured by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) for its contribution to the world’s first Administration-led “Training-the-Trainer” programme on green maritime fuels, successfully conducted in Hong Kong.

Organized by the Maritime Just Transition Task Force (MJTTF) in collaboration with the Government of Hong Kong, the programme brought together global maritime organizations, educators, industry experts, and policy stakeholders to strengthen seafarer training for alternative fuels and sustainable shipping practices.

IMU contributed academic expertise and practical training perspectives towards developing competency frameworks for handling methanol- and ammonia-fuelled vessels, supporting the global transition towards decarbonisation and future-ready maritime operations. ⚓

Indian Maritime University participated in Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2026, held in Singapore from 20–24 April 2026 under the theme “Actions Meet Ambition.”

Organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the event brought together over 5,000 maritime professionals from nearly 80 countries.

The IMU delegation comprised RAdm Amit Bose (Retd.), Director, IMU Kolkata Campus; Dr. S. Thangalakshmi, Associate Professor, SMET, IMU Mumbai Port Campus; Shruti Narasimhan, Final Year BBA (LRE), IMU Chennai Campus; and Mohd Emaad Khan, 3rd Year B.Tech (Marine Engineering), IMU Kolkata Campus.

The delegation participated in conferences, exhibitions, institutional visits, and networking engagements focused on decarbonisation, AI, cybersecurity, smart ports, digital transformation, autonomous systems, and sustainable shipping.

The delegation also engaged with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to explore academic collaboration, research partnerships, and student exchange opportunities.

At EXPO@SMW, delegates witnessed emerging maritime technologies including AI-driven systems, robotics, autonomous navigation, digital twin technologies, and alternative fuel innovations.

The visit also enabled interaction with IMU alumni and global maritime professionals, strengthening IMU’s international engagement and industry connect. ⚓

An interactive seminar was organized for Third Year B.Sc. (Nautical Science) cadets in collaboration with the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) and the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN).

The session featured Ms. Suchita Gupta, Senior Psychologist and Operations Coordinator (India), ISWAN, and Capt. Nilesh Murudeshwar, Project Manager and Maritime Expert, MACN, Mumbai, as resource persons.

The seminar focused on critical aspects of a seafarer’s professional journey, including awareness on authorized RPSL agencies, fraudulent recruitment practices, mental health challenges at sea, resilience, bullying and harassment prevention, gender inclusivity, financial planning, ethical conduct, and anti-corruption practices in the maritime industry.

Cadets actively participated in the interaction session, raising insightful questions on stress management, workplace harassment, and safe reporting mechanisms for unethical practices onboard ships. The programme provided valuable guidance towards building responsible, resilient, and ethically aware maritime professionals.

The events encouraged students to reflect on the ideals, contributions, and enduring impact of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on education and social reform.

An Anti-Drug Awareness Seminar conducted at IMU Navi Mumbai Campus empowered cadets with important knowledge about the harmful effects of drug abuse and its impact on health, careers, and society. Through insightful discussions, real-life case studies, and awareness on legal consequences under the NDPS Act, the session encouraged students to make informed and responsible choices.

IMU Strengthens Maritime Innovation Ecosystem with MIF Partnership

📍 Indian Maritime University exchanged an MoU with the Maritime India Foundation (MIF) at Chennai Port Authority for the implementation of the Sagarmala Startup Innovation Initiative (S2I2) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

As a designated Maritime Innovation Hub (MIH), IMU will mentor and support maritime startups through its incubation centre — I-SEAS (IMU Start-up Entrepreneurship and Accelerator Setup) — fostering innovation, research, and real-world maritime solutions in areas such as ports, shipbuilding, and marine transport.

Under the initiative, five startups selected through MAR-a-THON: India’s Maritime Hackathon 2025 will be mentored at IMU, with seed funding support for solution development and implementation.
