1. Interpol issues Red Notice against Nirav Modi’s sister:
The Interpol has issued a Red Notice against the sister of Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case “mastermind” Nirav Modi in connection with the money laundering probe by the Enforcement Directorate.
2. Delhi government launches doorstep delivery of public services:
After months of planning, the Delhi government on September 10 launched its ambitious project to deliver public services at the doorstep of residents.
From driving licences to marriage certificates, Delhiites can now apply for 40 government documents to be delivered at their homes for a fee of Rs 50 per service.
3. CPEC to consider Pak. social sector priorities:
China and Pakistan are looking afresh at projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), in tune with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s focus on development of social infrastructure.
“China will give more assistance on a priority basis to such areas as agriculture, education, medical service and drinking water, delivering tangible benefits to more people,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, in response to a question.
4. JP Associates takes to NVLT:
ICICI bank has filed insolvency petition against Jaiprakash Associates before the national company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
The Allahabad bench of NCLT has asked the ICICI bank to serve notice to its corporate debtor Jaiprakash Associates within three days and directed the Jaypee group firm to file reply by September 17.
5. ArcelorMittal raises bid for Essar Steel:
ArcelorMittal is understood to have revised its offer for the bankrupt Essar Steel to Rs 42,000 crore, against Russia’s VTB Group-backed NuMetal’s offer of Rs 37,000 crore and Vedanta’s Rs 34,000 crore.
6. India may overtake China in farmed shrimp production:
India is set gain the top slot in farmed shrimp production, overtaking China in 2019-20, said Ravi Kumar Yellanki, president, Society of Aquaculture Professionals.
“We have already overtaken China in shrimp exports last year but are on par with regard to farmed shrimp production. Next year, we will overtake China [on this count] too,” he said.

7. Jack Ma names Zhang to head Alibaba:
Alibaba founder and billionaire Jack Ma announced on September 10 that he would step down as the Chinese ecommerce giant’s executive chairman next year and named the company CEO as his successor.
8. Payments banks’ total deposits under Rs 540cr:

For all the fervour payments banks have generated in India, their total deposits are just under ₹540 crore which is lower than funds mobilised by some large bank branches.
Of the four payments banks operating in India, Airtel Payments Bank had deposits of Rs 306.74 crore, Paytm Payments Bank (Rs 193.68 crore), Fino Payments Bank (Rs 37 crore) and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) (Rs 1.39 crore respectively).

9. Jan Dhan overdraft option likely to give Rs 32,000 crore boost to economy:
The government expects at least half of the 32 crore Jan Dhan accounts to avail the overdraft facility for Rs 2,000 with no conditions attached, a finance ministry official said, that would translate to a Rs 32,000 crore booster shot for the economy.
10. Google Wants More Time to Comply with RBI’s Data Rule:
Google has sought an extension of a “couple of months” to comply with the Reserve Bank of India’s rule requiring companies to host customer data locally, said a top official in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
11. Novak Djokovic wins US Open to equal Sampras:

Novak Djokovic has learned to live in the shadow of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal but the 31-year-old Serb demonstrated once again on September 09 how this is an era of three great men’s champions rather than two.
In beating Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to win the US Open for the third time, Djokovic took his career tally of Grand Slam titles to 14. That equals Pete Sampras’ career total, which until nine years ago was the record in the men’s game but is now bettered by Federer (20) and Nadal (17).

1. Hand-over of Chabahar port hand-over on track:
India on 07 September said Iran has stuck to the agreed timeframe in its plans to hand over the operational responsibility of a part of the Chabahar port to an Indian entity in October.
The smooth movement regarding the strategically important port came a day after official sources indicated that the United States would give a ‘carve out’ to India’s investment in the project.
2. COMCASA to help keep a watch over Indian Ocean:
The foundational agreement Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) which India concluded with the U.S. at the 2+2 dialogue will enable Indian military to get a better picture of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) which is seeing increasing Chinese movements, officials said.
3. Can India take SAHI road to urban mobility?
What should the future of mobility be for India? “Safe, Adequate, Holistic Infrastructure or SAHI.” That is the recommendation of a report presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Global Mobility Summit, Move, in New Delhi on 07 September.
‘Transforming India’s Mobility: A Perspective’ prepared by the NITI Aayog and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) calls for efficient and convenient public transport to answer the twin problems of pollution and congestion. The report quickly attracted attention amid daily increases in fuel prices.
4. CAD widens on higher trade deficit:
India’s current account deficit (CAD) in the first quarter of 2018-19 increased by $0.8 billion but as a percentage of India’s GDP declined marginally to 2.4% of the GDP as compared with 2.5% of the GDP in the first quarter of 2017-18 as per data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 07 September.
5. Infosys, Temasek to set up JV:
Infosys has joined hands with Temasek, an investment firm headquartered in Singapore, to set up a joint venture (JV).
Infosys would hold 60% in the JV with the rest being held by Temasek. “The joint venture will integrate teams from Infosys and the operations of Temasek’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Singapore, Trusted Source Pte. Ltd., which currently delivers IT services to Temasek and a number of other clients,” Infosys said in a statement.
6. Govt. shortlists 11 CPSEs for buyback:
The Finance Ministry has shortlisted about a dozen Central Public Sector Enterprises, including Coal India, NTPC, Nalco and NMDC, for a possible buyback of shares in the ongoing financial year.
The other companies which are in the list include NLC, BHEL, NHPC, NBCC, SJVN, KIOCL and Hindustan Aeronautics, officials said.
7. Mutual fund asset base at Rs 25 lakh cr:
Mutual funds’ (MFs) asset base touched a record Rs 25 lakh crore in August-end, a surge of 8.41% over the previous month, on the back of robust inflow in liquid funds and strong participation from retail investors.

8. Nepal looks beyond India, gets access to 4 China ports:
China will allow Nepal to use four of its ports, the Nepalese government said on 07 September, as the landlocked nation seeks to end India’s monopoly over its trading routes by increasing connections with Beijing. Kathmandu has sought access to Chinese ports to reduce dependence on India since a prolonged blockade of its border crossings with India in 2015 and 2016. Officials from Nepal and China finalised a protocol at a meeting in Kathmandu, giving Nepal access to the Chinese ports.
9. Walmart deal with Flipkart: I-T dept gets Rs 10,000cr in tax:
American retail giant Walmart’s acquisition of 77% stake in Flipkart has made the income tax department richer by more than Rs 10,000 crore after the former agreed to pay all dues in consultation with the Centre, reports Sidhartha.
10. Among flyers, Indians were 3rd largest nationality in ’17:

Indians were the world’s third largest air travellers (by nationality) last year. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on 06 September released World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) for 2017 in which it has added ranking of passenger traffic by nationality, for international and domestic travel, where the flyer’s citizenship as opposed to the country of residence has been taken into account.
11. Interpol panel to decide on red corner notice for Choksi in Oct:
India’s request for issuing a red corner notice against fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi will be taken up by an internal committee of Interpol in October as Indian agencies have presented a strong case against Choksi and have demanded issuing the global notice.
12. Why Kenya’s Gujaratis are draining all their Kutch cash:
Money parked in banks of Kutch by wealthy non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs), mostly from Kenya, is flying back to the African country.
About Rs 430 crore in NRG deposits were withdrawn between April and June 2018 alone. As a result, NRG deposits in banks across Kutch have fallen to Rs 11,872 crore in the quarter ended June 2018 from Rs 12,302 crore in the preceding quarter, reveals data compiled by State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC), Gujarat.
12. Numetal’s bid for Essar Steel valid: NCLAT:
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on 07 September said that Numetal’s Rs 37,000-crore bid for Essar Steel is valid and asked the other bidder, ArcelorMittal, to clear dues related to two companies — Uttam Galva and KSS Petron — within three days to remain in the race for the insolvency-hit company.

The $85-billion buyers’ credit market has come to a grinding halt with Indian banks reluctant to provide guarantees through letters of undertaking (LoUs). This has resulted in the interest rates on such instruments going through the roof, making business difficult for small importers.

2. ManikSarkar resigns in Tripura, BJP to take over on March 8:
ManikSarkar resigned as Chief Minister of Tripura on March 4 but was told to officiate until the new government led by the BharatiyaJanata Party takes charge.

3. Sir Roger Bannisterthe first person to break the “four-minute a mile” barrierdies:

Sir Roger Bannister, who died on March 3, at the age of 88, has been described as "one of the greatest inspirational figures in the history of British sport".He secured his place in sporting history when he became the first person to break the four-minute one mile barrier.He achieved the feat when he ran one mile distance at a time of three minutes 59.4 seconds at Iffley Road sports ground in Oxford on 6 May, 1954.

4. Cars of President, Vice-President to have number plates:
Parting with the practice of displaying just the State Emblem of India, the vehicles of constitutional authorities and dignitaries, such as the President, the Vice-President, Governors and Lieutenant Governors will soon have to display their registration numbers.

5. Pakistan elects its first Dalit woman Senator:

Pakistan elected its first Dalit woman Senator over the weekend, in polls which also saw the ruling party strengthen its hand ahead of general elections in the country. Opposition candidate Krishna Kumari Kohli’s surprise victory stirred a wave of optimism on social media, as Pakistanis celebrated the rare win for a woman from a marginalised community that lies at the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy.

6.Italy votes under new electoral law:
Italians went to the polls on March 4, in a vote that could bring political gridlock after an election campaign marked by anger over the listless economy, high unemployment and immigration.

7.Cash-rich PSU general insurer may buy out smaller ones:
Taking cue from ONGC’s buyout of HPCL, the government may look at replicating the same in the insurance sector by asking a cash rich PSU general insurer to buyout the smaller ones.

8. Vietnam refinery: IOC bids for stake:
State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC) has bid for a stake in Vietnam’s Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Company as it looks at the southeastern nation to expand business beyond Indian shores.

9. ‘Defaulting promoters must be barred from bidding’:
Axis Bank chief Shikha Sharma has called for creating a better credit culture for long-term benefits and opined that one way to achieve it is to debar defaulting promoters from bidding for their assets during insolvency proceedings.

The income tax department has unearthed a Rs.3,200 crore scam where 447 companies deducted tax from its employees but did not deposit with the government and diverted to further their business interests.

11. Disability rights activist Abidi dies of chest infection:

Javed Abidi, India’s global face for the disability rights movement, died due to a chest infection on March 4,the 53-year-old director of National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, who was also the founder of Disability Rights Group (DRG), is survived by his mother and two siblings.

12. Next crash course for machines: ‘Common sense’:
Microsoft’s co-founder Paul Allen said that he was pumping an additional $125 million into his non-profit computer research lab for an ambitious new effort to teach machines “common sense.”

13. EU’s bruised ‘Queen’ Merkel gets 4th term:
Germany’s Social Democrats voted in favour of forming another government with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives, ending nearly six months of political limbo and setting Europe’s economic powerhouse on a path to the political stability it craves — at least for now.

14. Government to banks: Back highest bidder:
In a stern message against twisting rules, the government has told lenders to companies facing insolvency proceedings that financial bids should be the sole criteria to select the winner in the race to acquire these entities.

15. With Alibaba on board, BigBasket to go offline:
Online grocer BigBasket is testing the waters to go beyond its online-only model following an investment by Chinese e-commerce major Alibaba.
The Bengaluru-based company is looking to supplement its core online business with offline kiosks that will stock daily groceries, fast-moving consumer goods, fruits and vegetables. These kiosks will be installed across various apartments and office complexes. BigBasket has already started a pilot for the new service with a separate app called BB Instant.

16. Numetal ready to even drop Ruias to acquire Essar Steel:
Numetal may revise its bid for bankrupt Essar Steel and exclude the Ruias if their presence in the consortium is found to be in violation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), according to VTB Capital, the dominant partner in the grouping.

17. After FATF grey-listing, Pakistan faces EU black-listing threat :
The Financial Action Taken Force’s (FATF) decision to put Pakistan on its grey list will not only make it difficult for Islamabad to attract foreign investments, but may also invite punitive action by the European Union as the bloc might put the country on its own blacklist.

18. RBI to bring interoperability for e-wallets within the promised time frame:
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to stick to its target of making digital wallets interoperable by April despite allowing payment companies two additional months to comply with its customer verification requirement.

India and Vietnam committed to enhancing joint co-production in defence, including transfer of technology from India in their ongoing defence cooperation, visiting President Tran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on March 3, after delegation level meetings. The two sides also built on previous statements on maritime security in the “Indo-Pacific” region, calling for free and open sea lanes.

2.Italy goes to crucial polls today:
The campaign before Italy’s national elections on March 4, has been self-obsessed and often petty and unedifying. But it has been instructive about one thing: the political forces that have torn at the global order and the EU have settled in the mainstream.

3.Chinese Parliament set to endorse President Xi’s line-up:
Chinese President Xi Jinping is marshalling his top team of personnel who intend to target poverty, curb growth of ‘grey rhinos’ that can destabilise the economy, and launch a fresh campaign against pollution.

4. Centre accuses Nissan Motor of placing “false” facts before international arbitral tribunal:
The Centre has accused Japanese automaker Nissan Motor of having placed “fundamentally distorted and false” facts before an international arbitral tribunal constituted at the instance of the company for alleged violations of the 2011 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Japan and the Republic of India.

5. AFSPA extended by 6 months in Assam:
The Assam government on March 3, announced extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) by another six months in the state.According to a statement, the Home and Political Department of Assam, through a notification issued on February 28, declared the entire state a “disturbed area” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

6.Non-bailable warrants against Nirav Modi, Choksi:
A special court on March 3 issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against diamond traders Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi in the alleged Rs 12,700-crore Punjab National Bank scam.

7.More than 100 killed since Philippine police returned to Duterte's drug war:
More than 100 drug suspects have been killed since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the police to rejoin his "war on drugs", an official said. Duterte was elected in 2016 on a promise to eradicate drugs, and launched an unprecedented campaign in which -- rights activists allege -- as many as 12,000 people have been killed.

1.Idol Wing lodges plaint on stolen statues:
In what is seen as the first step towards detecting a major crime committed at least half a century ago, the Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu police has preferred a complaint that two ancient bronze icons of Emperor Raja Raja Chola I and his royal consort Lokamadevi have been stolen from the world-famous Sri Brihadeeswarar temple (Big Temple).

2.‘India could be a market for Indonesian aircraft’:
There might be a market in India for Indonesian aircraft, with the country manufacturing a number of small, short take-off landing aircraft.

3. IndiGo launches direct flights to three cities:
A day after the relaunch of the Vijayawada- Kadapa flight, the Vijayawada International Airport on March 2, witnessed the launch of 10 direct services of IndiGo from the city to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Vijayawada is Indigo’s 50th destination.

4.No change in stand on Dalai Lama:
India has not changed its position on the Dalai Lama, the External Affairs Ministry said in response to a news report that the Union government had instructed senior officials and leaders to stay away from the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the exile of the Tibetan spiritual leader in India.

5. INSV Tarini reaches Cape Town in last leg of its journey:
An all-women crew leading the Indian Navy Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini docked at a port in Cape Town in South Africa on March 2, in the last phase of its maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe.The expedition is being covered in five legs, with stop-overs at Fremantle in Australia, Lyttleton in New Zealand, Port Stanley in Falklands, and Cape Town.

6.Chinese lawmakers’ wealth soars:
In a country where the Communist Party makes all the big decisions, Chinese lawmakers hold very little political power. But they have plenty of money $650 billion of it and that is growing.According to the Hurun Report, a research organisation in Shanghai that tracks the wealthy in China, the net worth of the 153 members of China’s Parliament and its advisory body that it deems “super rich” amounts to $650 billion, up by nearly a third from a year ago.

7. ArcelorMittal, Nippon Steel to jointly bid for Essar Steel:
Steel baron Lakshmi Niwas Mittal-led ArcelorMittal and Japanese steel major Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) have placed a joint bid for debt-laden Essar Steel.In its resolution plan for Essar Steel, ArcelorMittal’s subsidiary ArcelorMittal India Private Limited (AMIPL)on February 12 outlined the intention to have NSSMC formally join its bid for Essar Steel.

8.‘EV charging infrastructure offers Rs.2 lakh-crore business opportunity’:
The Indian electrical and electronics industry is expecting business worth more than Rs. 2 lakh crore from electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the next five years as the automobile industry firms up plans for electrification of passenger cars and public transport.
“In the next decade, technology will change the face of the industry. There is vast scope of business [possible] from charging infrastructure alone.”

9.Infy staff, taxmen, fake CA under CBI lens for fraud:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating a “revised tax returns” fraud involving several unknown employees of Infosys Technologies, officials from the income tax (I-T) department and one fake chartered accountant (CA) from Bengaluru. This scam, benefiting employees of bellwether IT companies, was unearthed by the I-T department in late January According to the FIR, a copy of which is with TOI, some I-T officials and a few staffers of Infosys connived with the fake CA now disowned by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and filed 1,010 revised tax returns using forged documents in the names of 250 taxpayers of various private firms, during three assessment years and claimed refunds illegally. Infosys is the vendor for the I-T department to process e-returns.

10. Once shamed for its poor s*x ratio, Jhunjhunu is Raj’s pride:
The 2011 census brought Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan the ignominy of being the district with the lowest s*x ratio of 837 girls per 1,000 boys among 33 districts of the state.Seven years on, the district is being hailed as a model with the s*x ratio at birth (SRB) touching an impressive 955 girls per 1,000 boys.

11. Trump defiant after criticism of steel & aluminium tariffs:
US President Donald Trump said on March 2, trade wars were good and easy to win, striking a defiant tone after global criticism of his plan to slap tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium that triggered a slide in world stock markets.

12. Flipkart’s Singapore parent puts Rs.4,500cr in wholesale arm:
Flipkart India, the wholesale arm of the country’s largest e-commerce company, has received almost Rs.4,500 crore in what is one of the largest capital infusions for the entity, according to the latest regulatory filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). This large investment in the wholesale arm from its parent indicates the aggressive plans that Flipkart has charted out to counter its closest rival Amazon, which too runs a wholesale arm.

13. Bank of Baroda holds ‘proceeds of crime’: SA panel lawyer:
The Bank of Baroda’s (BoB’s) South African unit has been in possession of the “proceeds of crime” linked to a dairy farm project that involved the politically connected Gupta family, said Thato Ntimutse, a lawyer for the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Asset Forfeiture Unit.

14. MFIs back in hiring mode after demon lull:
With small and micro lenders microfinance institutions and small finance banks, getting their growth engines firing at 15%, expansion and recruitment is on a high after it hit a lull during demonetisation.

15. India a top market for IBM in 2017:
India was one of the fastest growing geographies for IBM in 2017, continuing a trend that started a few years ago. IBM India’s revenue grew by 8.6% in reported currency (5% in constant currency) in the year. Only Mexico and Spain grew faster among the major countries. China declined by 10% in constant currency. Many other geographies also declined, including the US, UK, Germany and Japan.

16. Non-KYC users can opt for gift vouchers: Paytm:
Consumers can still load money into a Paytm wallet even if they haven’t completed their Know-Your-Consumer (KYC) formalities. Paytm appears to be working around the latest directive of the RBI for mandatory KYC, where users can load money into their accounts through gift vouchers on the platform. But these gift vouchers won’t let you send money to others or send it back to your bank accounts. They also come with an expiry date of one year a standard practice among players issuing such vouchers.

17. Change rules of origin to check B’desh imports: Textile industry:
With apparel from Bangladesh made from fabric sourced out of China flooding the Indian market, the textile industry wants the union commerce ministry to tweak SAFTA’s (South Asia Free Trade Area) rules of origin to make it mandatory for the neighbour to use yarn and fabric produced in India in its garments to claim duty and quota-free exports.

The Hindu:

1.Assets of fugitive economic offenders will be seized:
In a bid to deter loan defaulters from fleeing the country, the Union Cabinet on March 1 approved the introduction of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018, in Parliament which would allow the government to seize all domestic assets of a person deemed to be a fugitive economic offender.

2. SBI, ICICI Bank hike lending rates:
With State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, and ICICI Bank, the largest private sector bank, increasing lending rates by up to 20 basis points (bps), home and car loans will become costlier.

3. India, Jordan firm up security cooperation:
India and Jordan on March 1 signed a framework agreement in defence cooperation paving the way for a joint strategy to counter common threats. The defence agreement, the first such understanding between the two sides, is the biggest takeaway of the visit by the Jordanian king Abdullah II.

4.State-run banks start to rationalise overseas units:
Public Sector Banks have started rationalising the overseas operations by consolidating overseas branches and closing down non-viable branches as part of the clean and responsible banking initiative. As per the banking sector agenda approved at the PSB Manthan in November last year, public sector banks (PSBs) have to examine all 216 overseas operations.

5.Government blocks 2 judge nominees of SC collegium over ‘seniority’:
In a blow to the Supreme Court collegium, already bleeding from internal dissension, the Centre has cited breach of ‘seniority’ to block recommendations to appoint Uttarakhand high court Chief Justice K M Joseph as a judge of the Supreme Court and Justice Surya Kant of Punjab and Haryana HC as CJ of Himachal Pradesh HC.

6.DA case filed against former CMD of bank:
The CBI has filed a disproportionate assets case against former chairperson-cum-MD of United Bank of India, Archana Bhargava, for allegedly amassing assets worth Rs.3.63 crore, more than her known sources of income between 2004 and 2014. She was earlier booked by CBI in 2016 in a corruption case and her residence was raided during which documents related to investment worth Rs.10 crore were recovered.

7. NFDC MD fired for favours to pvt TV network:
The I&B ministry has sacked National Film Development Corporation managing director Nina Lath Gupta with immediate effect for allegedly favouring Sun TV Network and for releasing advertisements to private channels beyond the 5% limit.

8.More than 1 lakh books will sail to Jaffna from TN:
More than one lakh Tamil books, collected from publishers and book lovers, are ready to be shipped to Sri Lanka to replenish resources at Jaffna Public Library, which lost its books and manuscripts in a fire nearly four decades ago.

9.Chinese prisoners working on China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Pakistan: MP:
A lawmaker claimed that China had sent a large number of its prisoners to work as labour on the $60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) development projects in Pakistan.

10. Customers threaten to dump e-wallets as KYC norms kick in:
India’s mobile wallet companies are seeing red as angry customers threaten to stop using these digital platforms, which are struggling to comply with regulatory norms that required them to complete the verification of transacting customers on the last day of February.

11. India, Russia, Bangladesh sign tripartite pact for civil nuclear cooperation :
In a landmark development India for the first time signed a tripartite agreement on March 1, with foreign partners -- Russia & Bangladesh -- for civil nuclear cooperation.

12. UPI transactions grow to 171 mn in Feb, Paytm claims 40% share :
UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, that allows instant money transfer between bank accounts through mobile phones, continues its strong growth, having clocked 171.4 million transactions in February, up 13.5% from the previous month, data released by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) show.
