Christians observe Easter all over the world. It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial, following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary. Easter also celebrates the defeat of death and the hope of salvation. Christian tradition holds that the death of Jesus paid for the sins of humanity and that his Resurrection represents the anticipation believers can have in their own resurrection.
