History:
India, with its vast resources, is becoming the world leader in food production and requires quality manpower to consolidate its position in the global food trade. Realizing the importance of Food Processing and need for value addition and to cater the education, research and extension needs of this sector, TANUVAS established, the Institute of Food and Dairy Technology in the year 1992 (
TN.G.O.M.S.No.376 dated 19.11.1991). This institute is situated in a vast area of 82.12 acres of land at Koduvalli village, Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu and well connected with Chennai city through National Highway 45. During the year 2005, this institute has transformed into full-fledged education, research and development institute in the field of food processing. Tech degree programme in Food Technology with an annual intake of 20 was started in the academic year 2006-07 as per Government Order Ms. No.122 dated 22.06.06 of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries, Department Government of Tamil Nadu. After successful graduation and placement of first two batches, during the year 2011-12, a two year M.Tech (Food Technology) programme was started with an intake of 5 per year. In the same year, an unique four year B.Tech programme in Poultry Production Technology, first of its kind in India, was started at this institute. During the year 2012, this institute was renamed as College of Food and Dairy Technology in tune with the academic activities. All programmes offered by this college are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. This college has strong research and development linkages with leading food processing institutes in India. Memorandums of Agreements (MOA) are in vogue with Ghent University, Belgium, University of Nebraska, USA and Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, Tanjore for student and staff exchange. As on date, this college has successfully completed more than 10 Research and Development projects funded by different funding agencies and has 5 ongoing research projects.
