CUAP Psychology Dept Organizes Lecture on Exploring Divinity, Madness, and Healing Practices

The Department of Psychology, Central University of Andhra Pradesh (CUAP), organized a guest lecture on “Divinity, Madness and Healing: Understanding Shamanic Practices in the South Asian Context” to promote a culturally nuanced understanding of mental health and indigenous healing systems.

The session was delivered by Dr. Baiju Gopal, Professor of Psychology at Christ University, Bangalore, who explored the relationship between divinity, altered states of consciousness, and experiences often labelled as madness. Drawing from South Asian shamanic traditions, he emphasized that such states are culturally interpreted as spiritual callings and pathways to healing rather than mere pathology.

The lecture referenced figures such as Ramakrishna Paramhansa and B. Hamakepe, and highlighted practices like Theyyam and other ritualistic traditions as embodied expressions of divinity that foster catharsis, healing, and community connection.

The speaker underscored the cultural embeddedness of these practices, noting their role in providing belongingness, reducing stigma, and offering meaningful avenues for expressing distress. From a psychoanalytic lens, particularly Melanie Klein’s Object Relations Theory, such experiences were interpreted as facilitating the integration of unconscious conflicts.

The programme was organised under the guidance and encouragement of Prof. S. A. Kori, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of CUAP. Senior administrators, including Prof. C. Sheela Reddy, Dean (Academics); Prof. S. B. Kivade, Registrar; and Dr. Akriti Srivastava, Head of the Department (I/C), Department of Psychology, extended their support in facilitating the event. The session was convened by Ms Mariya Raju, Assistant Professor (T & C), Department of Psychology.

The event saw active participation from students and faculty, reflecting CUAP’s commitment to culturally informed academic engagement
