Polba Mahavidyalaya observed "Sanskrit Divas" on 31 August 2026, with due academic enthusiasm and cultural fervour. The programme was convened jointly by the Department of Sanskrit and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college. The event aimed to highlight the historical, literary, cultural, and contemporary significance of Sanskrit and to encourage students to engage with the language through various activities.
The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Patron and Teacher-in-Charge, Dr. Narugopal Kaibarta. In his inaugural address, he emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting India's rich linguistic and cultural heritage.
Following the inauguration, Sri Bikash Pal, SACT, Department of Sanskrit, introduced the significance of Sanskrit Divas and explained the relevance of observing the day. He drew attention to the enduring contribution of Sanskrit to Indian literature, philosophy, religion, science, and cultural traditions.
The ceremonial proceedings began with the recitation of Shanti Shlokas by Dr. Kali Prasad Mishra, Head of the Department of Sanskrit. The students of the Sanskrit Department subsequently performed Mangalacharan, setting an appropriate traditional and cultural tone for the programme.
An important academic segment of the programme was a lecture delivered by **Dr. Santanu Sengupta, Assistant Professor, Department of History, entitled “Relevance of Sanskrit in the Study of Ancient Indian History.”
The academic proceedings were followed by a vibrant cultural programme presented by the students of the Sanskrit Department. The students performed a Sanskrit song, followed by a dance recital based on Sanskrit songs celebrating divinity. Two short skits based on everyday conversations in Sanskrit were also presented. These performances demonstrated the students' ability to use Sanskrit not merely as a classical or textual language but also as a medium of creative expression and everyday communication.
A "Shloka Recital Competition" was also organised for the students as part of the celebration. The competition provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of Sanskrit verses, pronunciation, recitation skills, and familiarity with the classical tradition. The winners were subsequently announced by Dr. Kali Prasad Mishra, who also conducted the prize distribution ceremony.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kali Prasad Mishra. The formal proceedings came to an auspicious close with a Shloka recital by Dr. Swagata Mazumdar, Department of Botany.
The observation of Sanskrit Divas at Polba Mahavidyalaya successfully combined academic discussion, traditional Sanskrit practices, student participation, and cultural performances. The programme helped underline the continuing relevance of Sanskrit in understanding India's intellectual and cultural heritage while also encouraging students to engage with the language in creative and practical ways. The active participation of students and faculty contributed significantly to the success of the event.
