Design rooted in context grows from local culture, heritage, and everyday practices. Sarita Sundar’s work reflects a deep engagement with India’s visual and cultural landscape, shaped by experience rather than global trends. Through her studio Hanno, she brings together research, design, and storytelling to explore how meaning is formed and shared. Her book, From the Frugal to the Ornate: Stories of the Seat in India, reflects this way of thinking by tracing the life of an everyday object and revealing the cultural layers within it.
As an academic advisor, she focuses on making history accessible and inclusive, encouraging multiple voices and participation. Her approach shows how design can emerge from its own context while staying relevant today.
