Water sustains life, yet access to clean drinking water remains one of the greatest global challenges of our time. Traditional desalination technologies are often energy-intensive, expensive, and difficult to deploy in off-grid or low-resource regions. To address this urgent issue, researchers at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, turned away from complex machinery and looked toward nature and sustainable chemistry for a solution.
The team developed a breakthrough 3D flower-inspired interfacial solar ev***rator that converts seawater, dye-contaminated water, and oil-polluted water into safe, clean drinking water using nothing more than natural sunlight. By modeling the device after flower petals, the design maximizes surface area and spreads heat evenly to maintain high ev***ration rates even under partial shade. The system is built using ordinary cotton cloth and an iron sulfide coating synthesized through a green process derived from discarded pomegranate peels. This innovative photothermal material converts visible light directly into heat right at the water’s surface, rapidly generating water v***r while preventing heat loss to the water below.
Requiring zero electricity, complex infrastructure, or toxic chemicals, this low-cost, scalable technology offers immense hope for coastal communities, remote villages, and disaster relief zones. This research demonstrates how powerful innovation can be when cutting-edge science is guided by nature and compassion for humanity.
