Congratulations Dr. Darshan!

We are extremely proud to celebrate the remarkable achievement of our PhD scholar, Dr. Darshan B. M., who successfully defended his thesis titled “Networked Linkages among Elected Women Representatives in Panchayati Raj Institutions in Karnataka: Exploring Social Media-Enhanced Participation and Representation”.

Under the guidance of Dr. Kalyani Suresh (Vice Principal and HOS, School of Arts, Humanities and Commerce), Darshan’s research explored how social media empowers grassroots women leaders across Karnataka, enhancing community engagement, collective decision-making, and participative development. Every PhD journey has a story to tell, and in many ways, Darshan’s journey is truly unique. Darshan’s doctoral adventure, which began in 2018, combined both qualitative and quantitative approaches and took him across the state, engaging deeply with elected women representatives.

His PhD defence, held on June 30, 2025, was well-attended and officiated by the external examiner, Dr. Arul Chelvan, Professor & Head, Department of Media Sciences, Anna University. Seeing this journey reach its destination is indeed a moment of pride for all of us at the department. We extend our best wishes to Dr. Darshan for his future academic endeavours.

Heading to New Creative Destinations: Highlights from 2D Animation Workshop

The dawn of the new semester at the Department of Mass Communication was marked with a creative blast. The students, returning after their vacation, were greeted by the department with a lively 3-day workshop on 2D animation featuring Mr. Sushanta Mondal—a celebrated animation expert whose work spans global studios like Universal Studios and Nickelodeon.

Mr. Mondal, through his sessions on the 19th, 25th, and 26th of June, toe-dipped the students into the world of 2D animation, introducing them to the basic concepts and storyboarding. From bouncing ball animations to crafting mood through colour palettes, students discovered that animation is not just about drawing—it’s about patience, persistence, and playfulness.

The workshop swayed between intense hands-on exercises and immersive live demonstrations, ably steered by the resource person and the interactions of a curious bunch of students from across BA and MA courses.

Roots, 20 years deep! shoots, as young as yesterday!

Earlier this month, the Department of Mass Communication, School of Arts, Humanities, and Commerce was graced by a heartwarming visit by the alumni from our very first batch of students (2004-05). Their professional foundation and our legacy were chiselled out of the same stone, and their visit was indeed a special moment for us. It was memorable for us to witness the poetic twist of our alumni bond with the current students, who are as old in age as the memories these alumni made here during their time. They reflected on how their formative years at the department shaped their journeys and expressed gratitude for the enriching experiences they had here. Here's to many more reunions and stories that connect the past, present, and future of our department! Listen to them speak about their experience.

“Goodbye, campus life, where memories were made and dreams took flight.

‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But we have promises to keep,
And miles to go before we sleep,
And miles to go before we sleep.’
