"VOCATIONAL COURSES ON 'ENVIRONMENT AND WATER MANAGEMENT'--AT A GLANCE"
The term environment etymologically means surroundings and in generally used for an abstract concept. The sarroundings may be natural or man-made and may be physical, chemical or biotic. The environment is thus, a complex of so many things surrounding an organism that interact not only with the organism but also among them selves. As a result of this it is difficult to iso late or alter any one of them without affecting other components. The growth, behaviour and life history of any an organism are, therefore, influenced by environment in which they live. With the advancement in the knowledge of environment, explosive increase in human population, scarcity of space, food problems, ome needs extensive study of the environment. Particularly in relation to human survival and their benefit. The most important ingredient of the environment is "water". Water is most important resource of biosphere. It is abundant, covering nearly three quarters of earth. Yet it is scarce of the total water of world (1.5 billion kilometers) the ocean hold 97.6% and 2.08% is bound in the form of icecaps. The balance of 0.31% constitute the fresh water of the earth. Out of this 40% is stored in deeper strata of the earth and is cosidered too much expensive to pump out the surface for most of the uses. Therefore, for all practical purposes. We are left with only 0.124% of total earth's water are present in rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, wells and tube-wells. Fresh water is Man's most precious needs. The perpertuation and existence of most of the living organism depend mainly upon the availability of clean water. Its misuse and indiscriminate consumption on a global, national or regional level are causing irrepairable damage to all the living beings including the man. "AIMS AND OBJECTS OF THE COURSE"
