Inspired by the ideals of great social reformer of nineteenth century, Maharishi Swami Dayanand Saraswati, the college was established in July, 1961 in Dehra Dun by Dayanand Shiksha Sansthan, Kanpur. The college memorizes eminent educationists, a legal luminary, philanthropist, Dr. Brijendra Swarup, M.A., LL.B, and LL.D, then the president of Premier Arya Samaj, Meston Road,
Kanpur, after whom the college was named as Dayanand Brijendra Swarup (Post Graduate) College popularly known as D.B.S. College, Dehra Dun. Hon'ble Shri Jagendra Swarup, Advocate & MLC is presently Secretary of the college as well as the Dayanand Shiksha Sansthan. The D.B.S. College is situated in the heart of city and is having easy accessibility. The campus is located near the bank of Rispana river, which is a perennial river flowing Mussoorie hiss of Himalayan Ranges. Once can watch towering Mussoorie Hills of the north and relatively dwarf hill of Shiwaliks in the south. The present academic year 2010-11 is a historical Golden Jubilee Year of the college. The college has a glorious past. it has been recognized as a premier institution of higher learning in India from its very inception. It is a center for academic excellence and achievements and is one of the finest institution for Sciences and Arts. Located at the cutting edge of knowledge, the college has not just kept pace with the changing world but has been the pioneering spirit behind many innovation in the field of education. It is striving to imbibe the teaching/learning powers with a unique blend of intellectual rigour and aesthetic and ethical engagement. The college continuously endeavours to enhance its performance and prestige. Research activities in various subjects is at par with any good institution, staff and scholars are regularly invited to present their research finding in national and international seminars, many papers had been and are accepted for publication in various good accredited journals. Besides quality teaching, the research performance of the faculty also received all-round by giving excellent university result and securing a large number of merit positions every year is a reflection on the quality teaching. The alumni of the college have shown outstanding performance in their chosen fields and many of them are in the key and very prestigious positions in different parts of the country and abroad. The college in indeed proud all of them. College was accredited with B+ grade by NAAC in 2004, another accreditation is due this year. UGC had identified this college as College of Potential Excellence and as a autonomous college. UGC committed substantial financial support in current XIth Plan period. Besides research and development, the support of the UGC is mainly for development in creation of Network Resource Centre, Equal Opportunity, Centre, Remedial Coaching, Coaching for NET/SET for SC/ST and General Student and Career and Counseling Cell. The College has received a grant of Rs. 25 Lakh from Hon'ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Shri Ramesh Phokhriyal 'Nishank' ji for construction of an auditorium of 200 seating capacity. Hob'ble Shri Ganesh Joshi has been very kind to sanction Rs. 16.5 lakh for additional construction of rooms from his MLA fund. In the Golden Jubilee Year College is in a major phase of overhaul, renovation and construction under the present Principal of the College.
