Abstract: Fragmented and evolving sustainability standards create opportunities for supplier opportunism in buyer–supplier relationships. Using a behavioral perspective, this study examines how active and passive sustainability-related opportunism shapes buyers’ responses across repeated occurrences and the indirect role of integrity-based trust. A sequential multistudy design combines a best-worst scaling survey with two vignette experiments. Active opportunism is perceived as more severe and generates lower continuation intentions than passive opportunism. Although buyers initially tolerate passive opportunism, its negative effects intensify with repeated occurrences. Moreover, opportunism form interacts with occurrence frequency, while supplier integrity-based trust significantly mediates the relationship between opportunism form and continuation intentions.

Key Highlights:

1. Active vs Passive Opportunism: Active sustainability-related opportunism is perceived as more severe by buyers & leads to significantly lower intentions to continue the relationship compared to passive opportunism.
2. The "Tolerance Trap" of Passive Opportunism: While buyers initially tolerate passive opportunism, its negative impact intensifies with repeated occurrences. Tolerance decreases sharply over time.
3. Role of Integrity-Based Trust: Supplier integrity-based trust plays a key mediating role. It significantly influences how buyers respond to opportunism and determines whether they choose to continue the relationship.

In your experience, which hurts buyer-supplier relationships more: active or passive sustainability-related opportunism & why?
