Chair for Tribal Studies,

The Chair was approved and established vide UGC letter No: 29-5 (3)/2012 (CU) dated 30/08/2013 under XII Plan Period. However, the Chair started functioning after the appointment of Chair Professor, Dr Satish Kr Ganjoo.

1. Professor Satish Kr Ganjoo, born on May 1, 1956, at Srinagar (Kashmir), obtained the coveted academic degree

s of M.Phil (1983) and Ph.D (1987) in Modern History with specialization in International Relations and Central Asian Studies from the University of Kashmir. He has worked in Central University of Himachal Pradesh (Dharmshala) as Chair Professor in the Chair for Tribal Studies, with additional charges of Coordinator, Sapt Sindhu Parisar, Dehra; Dept of History, Culture and Archeology; and, Dept of Political Science and International Relations. Earlier he held the distinguished faculty and administrative positions in RC- Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar); Centre of Central Asian Studies, University of Kashmir (Srinagar); Centre for Advance Study in Education and Technology, Srinagar (Kmr); CASET Post Graduate Evening College, Srinagar (Kmr); and, Government Degree College, Baramulla (Kashmir). He was appointed as Senior Consultant (Research) by Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi. He has also been associated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi); Himachal Pradesh University (Shimla); Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya (Wardha, Maharashtra); and, other institutions of higher research and learning. Professor Ganjoo - an educationist by profession, a historian by obsession and a researcher by choice; developed the excellent potential for research. Dr Ganjoo has been the member of Academic Council, various Boards of Studies and other committees at Central University of Himachal Pradesh and Guru Nanak Dev University. Being the Principal Investigator and Project Director in different interdisciplinary research projects, he has participated in several seminars and written about thirty six research papers. His name was recommended for the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1991; and, received recognition from prestigious NGOs --- Rashtriya Gaurav Award (2004), Best Citizen of India Award (2005), Vijay Shree Award (2005), Appreciation Award (2007), Leading Educationist of India Award (2018), Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award (2018), Birsa Munda National Award (2019), Dr Shyama Prasad Mukerjee Award (2019). Besides, he is associated with a number of social, academic and research organisations: ICSSR, ICPR, ICHR, KECSS.

2. Projects: The Chair has undertaken the following Research Projects:
1. “Influence of Islam on the Tribes of Kashmir”; submitted to ICSSR for approval as Major Research Project.
2. ‘’Gujjar History and Culture’’; Chair for Tribal Studies, Central University of Himachal Pradesh.

3. Teaching: The Chair has undertaken the following regular teaching work :
1. Post Graduate Diploma in Tribal Studies
2. Post Graduate Diploma in Jammu and Kashmir Studies
3. Certificate Course in the Culture and History of Gujjars
4. Certificate Course in Sharda Script

4. Coordination with other Teaching Departments of University:
1. The Chair is taking regular classes and looking after the Post Graduate Department of History, Central University of Himachal Pradesh.

5. Research: The Chair has taken up wide range of research and academic activities. Some of the fields identified for research are:

1. Comparative Analysis of Civilizations, Folk Culture, Languages & Literature ( between states in NE, with other states of Western Himalayas, or other States of India)
2. Civilizational models of social evolution, cultural transformation and policy-genesis. Genesis of a society’s civilizational structure. Civilizational vectors and risks of modern global transformations
3. Social customs, Customary laws & Traditional Legal system ( Comparative studies also)
4. Indigenous Faith & Belief, Darshan (For each region or State or Faith)
5. Economic relations between peoples from Hills & Plane, Traditional economic systems
6. Political relationship & social relations between Kingdoms from NE India & other part of India,
7. Political system and philosophy in NE India/ States
8. Ancient history to Freedom movement: Role of different states of North East
9. Cultural relativism and Cross cultural relationships- Genesis of Kinship in North East

6. Publications: The Chair proposes to bring out publications in the form of:

7. Departmental Library : The Chair has purchased the books for about Rs 1.5 lac so far and created a departmental library. Efforts are being made to establish a rich library and documentation centre.

8. Contribution in Administrative Work: The Chair is actively involved in the administrative and academic affairs of the University. Besides participating in different CVC, BoS and BoR meetings of the University as SPECIAL INVITEE, the Chair is also the member of various committees and boards.

9. The Chair conducted Five National and Three Regional Suminars with the help of UGC, ICPR and ICSSR.

10. The Chair established the Department of History, Culture and Archeology in the CUHP.

11. The Chair established the Department of Political Science and International Relations in the University.

12. The Chair established the Sapt-Sindhu Parisar of Central University of Himachal Pradesh at DEHRA (HP).
