Greetings from The English Debating Society of Sri Venkateswara College!

We are immensely proud to announce the second edition of Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh Memorial Turncoat Debate

Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh was a pioneer in the establishment of Sri Venkateswara College. She led a life of public activist rallying for emancipation of women and children via education and other reformative changes.

This will be a one-day Turncoat Debate event with exciting cash prizes, open to all individuals regardless of affiliations to an institutional debating society.

Guidelines for the debate:
Date - 18th September 2022, Sunday
Format - Turncoat (Each speaker will speak both for and against the motion)
Number of rounds in the tournament – Preliminary and Finals
Motions – Will be released prior to the tournament
Speech duration – 6 mins (3 FOR + 3 AGAINST)
Platform -- Zoom/ Google Meet

[People Speak 2022 | Closing Remarks]

Greetings from the English Debating Society, Sri Venkateswara College!

At the outset, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who spent the last weekend with us participating at the 19th People Speak, the annual debating tournament of English Debating Society, Sri Venkateswara College and making it absolutely special and immensely successful for all of us. This edition was the largest edition in the history of People Speak witnessing participation from 35+ countries and approximately 120 teams and 150 adjudicators inclusive of both Open and Novice category, making this edition really grand. We acknowledge the efforts of the entire organising committee, i.e. each and every member of Venky DebSoc, for facilitating the smooth functioning of the tournament and helping us stay absolutely on schedule for all the 3 days.

We would like to wholeheartedly congratulate the Open Champions of the tournament, team Charot, comprising Irene Dela Cruz, Ignacio Lorenzo Villareal and Maeca Pansensoy. They were given a solid fight by the team Clown Munde in Navi Mumbai, comprising Jibran Khan, Tejas Jaiswal and Kevin Santhosh and ended their beautiful run as the Open Finalists of the tournament.

We would also like to extend heartfelt congratulations to the following adjudicators for their phenomenal achievements:
1st Best Adjudicator – Debayan Bhattacharya
2nd Best Adjudicator – Dev Mishra
3rd Best Adjudicator – Jayeesh Arora and Rahul Datta
4th Best Adjudicator – Nauman Beig
5th Best Adjudicator – Ish*ta Singh and Muskan Mehra

Congratulations are in the order to the Novice Champions, team Occam’s Chainsaw, comprising Alankrita Pathak, Ann Sarasa and Kavya Ramasubramanian who were given a tough fight by the Novice Finalists, team Sharaf at Gazistan, comprising Gazi Mahtab, Gazi Wasif Huda Umid and Sharaf Ahmed.

We take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude to our Core Adjudication Panel comprising Bea B. Legaspi, Ishaan Chawdhary, Noluthando Honono, Sher May and Shaun Lee for their relentless efforts, exciting motions and being the most wholesome.

Sincere thanks to all our IAs for judging at our tournament and providing quality feedback.

We can’t thank enough our Equity Officers, namely Krishanu, Nikhila Pushadapu and Vaishnavi Sharma for being the best ever we could have asked for and ensuring that this tournament remains a safe and conducive space.

We are supremely grateful to our tab team, comprising Soumya Bhayana and Mahesh R for being remarkably efficient and running the entire tournament absolutely on time.

[People Speak 2022 | Core Adjudicator #5]

We’re enchanted to announce our fifth and final Core Adjudicator for People Speak 2022, straight from the UADC 2020 and ABP 2020 CAP, Sher May Nar!

Sher May, the name that speaks for itself in the debating circuit worldwide as they have crushed innumerable debating tournaments across the globe. The best speaker of ABP and one of the top speakers of HWS Round Robin, Sher May has been on the CAP of UADC and ABP last year. The UADC 2017 Champion, they have made it to the finals of ABP 2019 and Doxbridge 4 and have judged the Open Final of Cambridge IV and Oxford IV this year.

We’re elated to have them on board!
