National Epilepsy Day is celebrated annually on the 17th of November in India. November is often observed as National Epilepsy awareness month throughout India.

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures which are also known as fits. During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behavioral symptoms and sensations which include loss of consciousness as well.
At present its not curable but it can be controlled if several factors are managed.

Current data shows that due to medical advancements and improved drugs, epilepsy can be cured to an extent of 70%, provided regular and continuous medication is taken. Research in the field of genetics has paved the way for newer treatment options which aim to find a permanent cure to this disease.

People with Epilepsy mustn't be ashamed and try to hide their problems or disease. Awareness must be spread that talking to someone is not a sign of weakness but a sign and symbolism of strength and acceptance of oneself. Its completely ok not to be ok.

We at BioSoc-DTU aim to spread this strength and awareness with all the epilepsy fighters and show our solidarity in the lives of people whom this neurological disorder has affected directly or indirectly. We aim on spreading awareness and igniting the torch of new research and discoveries related to this neurological disorder for a faster cure and proactive research opportunities and funding in this very field.

“Food can be the most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison”

National Nutrition Week is celebrated every year in the first week of September to motivate people to maintain a healthy diet replete with all the essential nutrients.

Novel strategies are employed to improve access to nutrition for the most vulnerable sections of society, many of whom suffer from chronic malnutrition. Biofortification and pest-resistant crops are indispensable tools offered by biotechnological research in our collective goal of creating a nutritionally secure society.

This National Nutrition Week, BioSoc-DTU encourages you to obtain a new perspective of the dangers of a food insecure society and reminds you that if you don’t pay attention to your health, you’ll be forced to pay attention to your illness.

"God spelled backwards is Dog and I don’t think that is a coincidence"- Katy Perry

Evolved over years, our furry friends have indeed left a wholesome mark in all of our lives. The domestic dog is called _Canis familiaris_ . With the help of artificial selection in nature our furry friends have evolved rapidly since the early humans domesticated them from wolves. With different colors, fur textures and much more diversity, each dog is unique and special in its own way.

International Dog Day is celebrated every year to spread awareness about the adoption and rehabilitation of our canine buddies. The public is galvanised to educate themselves about different breeds of dogs and their needs.

BioSoc-DTU hopes that the message of dog care and adoption reaches you and together we create nurturing, safe and celebrated homes for our Dog friends. Help us spread this message forward!

“It was the most exhilarating moment I have experienced in science, to peer into the inner workings of the ribosome.”

Thomas A. Steitz, a biophysicist, structural biologist and Nobel Prize laureate is best known for his work on elucidating the atomic structure of the 50S segment of the bacterial ribosome using data collected from X-ray diffraction.
His work, along with that of Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Ada Yonath, have helped the scientific world to understand the complete structure of ribosomes and the process of translation of RNA into proteins.

On the occasion of his 82nd birth anniversary, BioSoc-DTU celebrates his remarkable achievements and career which spanned over six decades and provided an important piece for solving the puzzle of the Central Dogma.

BioSoc-DTU organised a film editing workshop for beginners on 9th August 2022. The mentor for the evening was Sanskar Srivastava, who with his exemplary skills made the session very engaging and productive.

The workshop began with the introduction to the various components of a video and their integration. The main agenda of the workshop was to familiarize the attendes with the commonly used editing softwares and their basic tools. Inorder to have a practical learning experience, the session concluded with a hands on training, wherein the attendees were asked to integrate some clips.

BioSoc-DTU thanks Sanskar for his time and efforts.

"Find me a cure”, was what Biochemist Gerty Cori’s diabetic father had said to her, sparking her lifelong interest in the metabolism of carbohydrates.

Gerty Cori, born on August 15, 1896, was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1947 for her contribution. She shared the Nobel with her husband and lifetime research partner Carl.
Her achievement came at a time when women were institutionally sidelined in scientific research. From studying a five years’ worth of Latin, mathematics and physics in a single year for her medical school entrance to persevering against pay and position disparity in American research institutions, Dr. Cori’s life and work proves that where there is a will, there is a way.

On her 126th birth anniversary, BioSoc-DTU brings you a post dedicated to her remarkable work on catalytic conversion of glycogen.

How many cancers can you name? Is sarcoma one of them?

Sarcoma a.k.a “The Forgotten Cancer” is a rare type of cancer affecting the bones and the body tissues. Though, accounting for less than 1% of all adult cancers, sarcoma awareness is crucial for its early detection. Symptoms like a painless lump on an arm or leg are likely to go unnoticed. But when should one be concerned about such signs?

In this post, BioSoc-DTU brings you the essential information necessary to burst the myths surrounding sarcoma.

_"If there are no mangroves, then the sea will have no meaning. It's like a tree with no roots, for the mangroves are the roots of the sea!”_ -Mad-Ha Ranwasii

Every year on July 26, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is observed to promote sustainable management and conservation of mangrove ecosystems.

Mangroves are a unique, magnificent, and vulnerable ecosystem that straddles the land-ocean divide. They play an essential role in the protection, well-being, and food security of coastal communities around the world. However, their continuous depletion is a threat to biodiversity and nature by large. Recognising the need to conserve this vast ecosystem, BioSoc-DTU brings you a post that attempts to shed light on its importance and significance.

- Thomas Malthus

World Population Day observed every year on July 11 intends to draw attention to the issues arising out of the rising population across the globe.
Biotechnology provides the solution to a vital question: How will food security be achieved for all in the regions where the population has expanded beyond the natural carrying capacity of nature?

This World Population Day, BioSoc-DTU urges everyone to ponder on the means necessary to maintain the delicate balance between rising population and limited resources. Let’s all pledge to help build a world where food feeds all and food insecurity touches none!

We have all heard that our gut microbiome impacts our mood, but did you know it also has an impact on our brain?😱

The scientific proof of the gut-brain connection has been established more than a decade ago and is a fascinating area of interest that is still under research.

People who have a healthy gut microbiome have better moods and fewer mental health problems. Numerous neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, depression, anxiety have connections with our gut.

Probiotic biotherapies have thus come up as therapeutic options to prevent these disorders by maintaining gut health. Your gut is a crucial part of your nervous system—so we, at BioSoc-DTU urge you all to eat healthy and stay happy.
