Press Statement SRCC Staff Association
14 June 2016.
The Staff Association (SA) of the Shri Ram College of
Commerce (SRCC) expresses its shock and condemns in
the strongest term the violent attack on our colleague Dr.
Vineet Mehta, Faculty in Physical Education, by the
President of DUSU, Satyender Awana and other goons
accompanying him, on the afternoon of 13th June, 2016.
Dr. Mehta was attacked inside his office in college’s
sports complex while he was working there.
Mr. Satender Awana came to the Principal’s office and
was pressurizing the college to allow six-seven unknown
persons to use the swimming pool free of cost. It is
notable that the college does not have a policy of allowing
anyone to use the pool facility free of cost, even its staff
members and students. After expressing his inability to
allow this illegality, the Principal also requested him to
find out if slots are available from Dr. Kuljeet Kaur, In-
charge, Pool committee, and Faculty in Physical
Education, as there is a limited number of seats available
for using swimming pool.
After this Awana walked into the office of Dr. Kaur in the
sports complex where Dr. Mehta was working. After
entering the office, Mr. Awana started talking in an abusive
language and demanded the mobile number of Dr. Kaur,
who happened to be outside the sports complex at that
point of time. Dr. Mehta requested them to get the number
from the College Office, as he was apprehensive of their
abusive behavior towards his senior women colleague.
Upon hearing this request, Satender Awana got furious and
started shouting the filthiest abuses and started punching
him in his face. He provoked others also to assault him
and Dr. Mehta then was attacked with a large photo frame
and name plates. One of the attackers then picked up a
weight lifting iron bar kept in the room to hit him.
Fortunately, Dr. Mehta ducked and saved himself. After
some time they left the office, threatening him with more
physical assault in the future targeting his life and limb.
It was even more shocking that the police instead of
acting promptly started adopting delaying tactics after this
incident. The police did reach the college promptly
yesterday and took Dr. Mehta for MLC and recording of
complaint for filing an FIR. However, even after promising
prompt FIR, it was not recorded on 13th June, 2016.
Instead teachers were being dissuaded from pursuing the
complaint saying that “some students may also file a
complaint against the teacher”. It was only after more than
70 teachers marched to the Maurice Nagar PS and a
delegation met the DCP on 14th afternoon, that it was
finally recorded. They were accompanied by the
Administrative officer of the College, who submitted an
official complaint signed by the Principal for filing the FIR.
A copy of the complaint from the College Principal was
also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police,
Civil Lines by a delegation of the Staff Association. The
DCP promised prompt and strong action. He promptly
forwarded it to the Police Station for immediate filing of
the FIR. Teachers waited at the Police Station till the FIR
was filed and copy received.
The Principal assured prompt representation to the Vice-
Chancellor, Proctor and the Advisor to DUSU for
appropriate action on the matter. The college has taken
legal advice on the matter. It has also sent a copy of its
complaint to the Commissioner of Police,
The Staff Association has demanded strongest possible
action from the University authorities as this incident has
the potential of completely destroying the academic and
peaceful atmosphere in the college and University.
We appeal to the members of the public to lend us their
voice of support so that we pursue the goal of justice for
our colleague. It is important that we send a strong
message that such violent attacks will not be tolerated and
we stand united against goondaism in the University
campus.
