We are elated to share a remarkable study by Dr. Tarini Shankar Ghosh’s group, recently published in the prestigious Nature Communications journal. The study titled ‘‘Gut microbiome features associated with Bifidobacterium colonization predict personalized probiotic persistence patterns’ was spearheaded by two Ph.D. students from Dr Ghosh’s group, Sourav Goswami and Alisha Ansari, supported by Mr. Chetan Sharaf (Alumnus, IIIT-Delhi) along with collaborators Paul W. O’Toole (University College Cork), Fergus Shanahan (University College Cork), and Vineet Ahuja (AIIMS, New Delhi).

Probiotics are widely consumed across the world, yet their persistence in the human gut varies significantly between individuals. In this study, the researchers explored how an individual’s existing gut microbiome influences the persistence of probiotics. Using eight widely used Bifidobacterium species and analysing over 50,000 gut microbiome samples from nearly 150 cohorts across 45 countries, the team identified how non-Bifidobacterial microbes shape probiotic persistence patterns.

The researchers further developed “Receptive Scores”, a framework to predict how well specific Bifidobacteria can persist in an individual’s gut, based on their microbiome and characteristics such as age and lifestyle. Validating across multiple clinical trials, they show that these scores can predict personalized probiotic persistence in ~70% cases, marking an important step towards personalized probiotic recommendations and precision gut health interventions.

Why do probiotics persist in some but not others? Here, analyzing 51,244 gut microbiomes from 149 cohorts, the authors identify key microbial patterns and introduce “Receptive Scores” to predict colonization of different Bifidobacteria from an individual’s baseline microbiome.
