Here is what all of you need to know about the society:
What’s the society about? Illuminati is the college’s quizzing society. Quizzing is a well recognized extra-curricular activity and the society aims to bring together quizzers in the college and hone their skills further. Also, a major aim of the society is to encourage people to take up quizzing and increase general awareness about the thin
gs happening around us. Our Objective. There is a common misconception that quizzing is only for people who can memorize and mug up random facts. We want to do away with it and show that anybody can quiz, and that there is no need to possess a repertoire of detailed factual knowledge to be a good quizzer. All one needs is a hunger to learn and general awareness of on-goings around them. A quizzer also needs patience, logical thinking and the ability to put two and two together. The more a person quizzes, the more he acquires these skills and this is what the society is for, to provide exposure to budding quizzers and help them improve. What all does the society do? Quizzing not only includes participating, but also means making questions. Making a good quiz requires hours of research and is a skill one masters over time. A good question is one which is workable from the facts given in the question itself and the answer is generally something you have heard about. We guide members on how to make quizzes and share everybody’s work with one another through regular sessions. This way, everybody learns from one another and increases their knowledge base and learns how to make a good quiz as well. The selection criteria. We conduct a written entrance test to select people. Questions cover all the fields, right from current affairs to sports to music to business. We induct members not only on the basis of their scores, but also after assessing the strengths of the person. We look to measure how wide a person’s knowledge base is and how he is able to apply it on a sheet of paper. Even if a person doesn’t know the answer to a question, we can judge the thinking process and knowledge by the answer given. What is expected of the members? Members are expected to have a decent knowledge base and should be willing to learn new stuff. It is a great opportunity to broaden one’s horizons and members are expected to make the most of it. Members are also expected to participate in quizzes in other colleges and compete with quizzers from all over the quizzing circuit and see where they stand. What can one expect as a member of the society? The best thing one can expect as a member is a chance to widen one’s horizons and learn so much new stuff you had no idea about earlier. You have an opportunity to represent your college and add feathers to the college’s cap. Making and hosting quizzes is a great chance to improve your presentation skills and certainly boosts your confidence. There is no better feeling than receiving appreciation for a quiz you hosted. And last but not the least - the spoils. All quizzes have prizes on offer, and if you’re good, quizzing can earn you a good amount of money. What all events does the society attend? Any event that the society organizes? Society members take part in quizzes all over Delhi and even outside the city. Right from full-fledged quiz fests to college department quizzes, we look to make the most of every chance we get. We travel to colleges all over Delhi, and it is a great opportunity for first year students to get a look around and visit colleges other than our own. The society organizes an annual Quizfest - Con Qurso. The 2014 edition featured six quizzes - General, Sports, India, Biz-Tech, Bollywood and MELA (Music Entertainment Literature Art), with over 200 participants combined. The Society’s Achievements. Within North Campus, there is no college where we haven’t made our mark. Hindu, SRCC, KMC, Ramjas, Daulat Ram, St. Stephen’s, D-School, IP College, SGTB Khalsa, Miranda House, you name it and we’ve won there. We have won quizzes in other DU colleges as well such as Sri Venkateswara College (Venky), Kamla Nehru College, and DCAC. IIIT (Govindpuri), NSIT (Dwarka), MSIT (Janakpuri), BVCOE (Pashchim Vihar), PEC (Chandigarh) are some other colleges where members won last year, thus taking the college name to newer heights. Any tips for those who want to join the society? The most important tip would be to stay aware of your surroundings. Read anything you lay your hands on. Gobble up any article you see and find interesting, and try to expand your knowledge base by reading and viewing new stuff. You never know when something you read before might help you. One cannot expect to become a quizzer overnight and therefore it is important to gradually improve upon your base day after day!
