The Hon'ble President of India on thursday i.e. on date 24/10/2024 notified the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, an alumni of Campus Law Centre, Faculty Of Law, University of Delhi as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) after the Central government cleared the same.
Justice Khanna will take over as the 51st CJI on retirement of incumbent CJI DY Chandrachud on November 10.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna served as a judge in the Delhi High Court holding positions such as Chairman/Judge-in-Charge of the Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre, and the District Court Arbitration Centre.
Justice Khanna has been involved in several landmark rulings at the Supreme Court, reflecting his strong jurisprudence in commercial and constitutional law. He was part of the bench in the Essar Steel insolvency case, which clarified the rights of financial creditors under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
He also ruled in cases related to the Shaheen Bagh protests, where the balance between the right to protest and maintaining public order was carefully evaluated.
In addition to his judicial work, Justice Khanna has played key administrative roles. He served as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee from June to December 2023, focusing on expanding access to legal aid and is currently the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)* and Member of the Governing Council of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, reflecting his commitment to improving legal services and judicial education.
Justice Khanna's upcoming tenure as CJl is widely anticipated, and his contributions to Indian law and justice are highly respected.
