Dr. (Smt.) Saraswati Masti, the Student Welfare Officer (SWO) of Karnatak Science College, Dharwad in association with the Internal Quality Assessment Cell (IQAC) of the college and the ISHA foundation, organized the special program on “Save Soil” under Value-Based Activity for NEP Students on 23-06-2022 in BCA hall, Karnatak Science College, Dharwad. The resource person Prof. G. S. Dasog, Ex-Dean (Agri), Soil Scientist, University of Agricultural Science, Dharwad, and other dignitaries were present. Dr. J. L. Kalyan, the incharge Principal of Karnatak Science College, Dharwad presided over the program. Prof. G. S. Dasog addressed the gathering and enlightened the faculty and students on the topic of “Save Soil”. He began with a saying; a bad bush is better than an open place, discourage the use of plastic, and grow plants. Also, he talked about the ‘Save Soil’ movement which was initiated by Sadguru, and how he took a journey of 30,000 km across 24 nations on a lone motorcycle to create awareness of the issue.
In addition to a large number of students, Prof G. S. Dasog (Resource person and Chief Guest), Dr. J. L. Kalyan (President), Prof. (Smt.) Saraswati Masti (SWO), Late Dr. C. G. Patil (IQAC deputy coordinator). Dr. L. T. Nayak (IQAC Coordinator), Prof. M. R. Ranganath (HOD of Physics), Dr. J. T. Gudagur (HOD of Geology), and Shri. D. B. Govindappa (Physical Education instructor) attended the program.
Prof. G. S. Dasog stressed the need to create more awareness programs on the importance of the campaign ‘Save Soil.’ He appealed to the students to discourage the use of plastics, which are posing a serious threat to the ecology.
Prof. G. S. Dasog empowered the students about the importance of saving soil from further degradation. Stating that the country's soil resource was declining rapidly, he said that the United Nations said that the soil must have at least three percent organic matter. However, the soil in the country has only 0.5 percent organic matter. “This not only affects agriculture production but also depletes the nutrients in the food we eat, and cause impacts human health”, he added and expressed concern over the possible risk of looming food security threat in the country.
