Charaideo: The Pyramids of Assam and the Legacy of the Ahom Kings

Nestled at the foothills of Nagaland, approximately 30 km east of the historic town of Sivasagar, lies Charaideo, the original capital of the Ahom Kings. Established around 1229 CE by Chaolung Sukhapa, the founder of the Ahom dynasty, Charaideo holds a significant place in the history of Assam.

A Symbolic Center of Ahom Heritage

Though the capital of the Ahom kingdom shifted multiple times, Charaideo remained the symbolic heart of their empire. It is home to the sacred burial grounds of Ahom kings and queens, as well as the ancestral gods of the Ahoms. The 42 tombs, known as Moidams, at Charaideo hillocks, are often compared to the Pyramids of Egypt. These majestic structures showcase the extraordinary architectural skills and craftsmanship of medieval Assamese sculptors and masons.

A Prominent City on the Hilltop

The name Charaideo, derived from the Tai-Ahom language, means "a prominent city on the hilltop" (Che = city, Rai = prominent, Doi = hill). Historically, this area was known as "Bihagadripahar" under the Borahi rulers. The Austric king Sungsaumara was the first ruler of this region, followed by notable Borahi kings such as Virochan, Chandrahash, Vikramadityapha, Bicharpatipha, and Pokhra. They founded two capitals near Charaideo, named Sonapur and Banpur.

Legacy of Chaolung Sukhapa

The first Tai-Ahom king, Chaolung Sukhapa (1228-1256), established his capital at Charaideo, marking the beginning of a new era. From here, he carved out the kingdom of Mung-dun-chun-kham, known as the garden of gold (Assam). His descendants ruled the region until 1838, when the British government ended their reign. Charaideo, part of ancient Pragjyotisha and Kamrupa, became known as the "Jerusalem of the East" due to its sacred Moidams, which are the resting places of Ahom kings, queens, and nobles.

Architectural Marvels

The Moidams of Charaideo are remarkable for their massive underground vaults with one or more chambers, domical superstructures, and hemispherical mounds covered by earthen heaps. At the top of each mound is a small open pavilion, known as a chow-chali, and the entire structure is enclosed by an octagonal dwarf wall. The Ahoms preferred to bury their departed family members at Charaideo, where the first king, Sukhapa, was laid to rest. Historical chronicles reveal that wives, attendants, pet animals, and valuable items were also buried with the departed kings.

Challenges and Preservation Efforts

Despite its historical significance, Charaideo faces challenges due to a lack of preservation schemes. Illegal settlers have caused irreparable damage by cutting earth from the Maidams and hillocks. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has also inadvertently damaged a significant Maidam in its attempts to explore and uncover its mysteries. Although over 150 Maidams exist, only 30 are protected by the ASI and the Assam State Archeology Department. The unprotected Maidams, like the largest one near Nimonagarh, known as Bali Maidam, suffer from neglect and encroachment.

UNESCO World Heritage Recognition

Despite these challenges, Charaideo continues to be a revered site for the Ahoms, believed to be the abode of the god Lankuri, identified with Lord Shiva.

Charaideo being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a major developmental achievement to the people of Northeast India.

Join us in celebrating the legacy of Charaideo, where the past comes alive and the grandeur of the Ahom kings endures.

“ৰাজ্যে আছে দুইটি পাঠা
একটি কালো একটি সাদা

ৰাজ্যেৰ যদি মঙ্গল চাওঁ

দুইটি পাঠাই বলি দাওঁ।”
