Once a common sight in our surroundings, sparrows are now gradually disappearing due to urbanization, habitat loss, and environmental changes. On this special day, let us pledge to protect and preserve their habitats by creating bird-friendly spaces, placing water bowls, and planting native trees.

Measles Awareness Drive

The Department of Zoology, SGGSW University, organized a Community Awareness Drive in Village Dhirpur, District Fatehgarh Sahib, to mark Measles Vaccination Day. The event was successfully coordinated by Dr. Monika with the help of Dr Jaspreet Kaur. Students interacted with villagers and spread awareness about the causes, symptoms, and prevention of measles, highlighting the importance of timely vaccination for children.

The initiative received a positive response from the community and helped address common misconceptions about vaccination. Dr. Charan Kamal Sekhon, Head of the Department of Zoology, appreciated the effort, emphasizing the importance of such outreach activities in promoting public health awareness.

Towards Experiencial Learning
The Department of Zoology organized an educational trip to the Ropar Wetland and the Government Fishery Center in Katli, Ropar, for students of B.Sc. Medical and M.Sc. Zoology. The aim was to give students hands-on exposure and a deeper understanding of ecology, biodiversity, and fisheries management.
The visit was led by faculty members including Dr. Charan Kamal Sekhon, Head of the Department, along with Dr. Monika Airi, and Dr. Jaspreet Kaur. At the Ropar Wetland, students had the chance to explore the natural wetland ecosystem.
Later, the group visited the Government Fishery Center in Katli, which spans about 25 acres. Interacting with an expert in the field allowed students to understand the practical side of fisheries and how it contributes to food security and rural livelihoods.

Society of Animal Sciences, Department of Zoology, SGGSWU, celebrated International Zebra Day on 29 January 2026 to promote awareness about zebra biodiversity, ecological importance, and conservation. Organized by Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, the event featured a documentary screening, “The Life of Zebras”, followed by an interactive discussion with active participation from M.Sc. and B.Sc. Zoology students. The programme concluded with inspiring remarks by Dr. Charan Kamal Sekhon, Head, Department of Zoology, highlighting the vital role of students in wildlife conservation. Faculty members Dr. Monika Airi, Dr. Yachana Kapoor, and Dr. Tarun Dhadwal were also present.

The visit offered students a valuable opportunity to observe diverse wildlife up close and understand animal behaviour, habitat management, and conservation practices. Dr. Tarun Dhadwal engaged students through an insightful session highlighting the latest advancements in zoological research, while Dr. Monika Airi motivated students to develop a spirit of scientific inquiry and stay updated with modern developments in the field.
