Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Program in Rural Schools of Charotar Region

On September 20, 2024, the Charusat Rural Education Development Program (CREDP) in collaboration with the Ashirvad Foundation, Ahmedabad, organized a vital Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Program aimed at girl students and female teachers at B.A. Patel High School and J.C. Patel Primary Girls' School, Changa. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to bridge the gap in health education and breast cancer screening services, particularly in rural areas where access to such resources is limited.

This program sought to empower over 280 participants, including 200+ girl students and teachers from standards 9 to 12 at B.A. Patel High School and 80+ from standards 7 and 8 at J.C. Patel Primary School. The focus was on promoting breast health, dispelling myths, and encouraging early detection of breast cancer through interactive sessions and practical demonstrations. Notably, 21 students from B.A. Patel High School underwent on-site screening for breast cancer.

Key components of the program included educational sessions conducted by healthcare professionals that emphasized the importance of early detection, workshops teaching self-examination techniques, and screening opportunities for participants. Educational materials such as brochures and handouts were distributed to reinforce the knowledge shared during the event.

A similar program was conducted at Manikaka Topawala Institute of Nursing (MTIN) at CHARUSAT, where over 200 girl students participated, with 30 students receiving breast cancer screenings.

The initiative was driven by the objective to raise awareness, facilitate low-cost or free screenings, and address misconceptions surrounding breast cancer in rural communities. Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, the program aims to ensure ongoing support and create a sustainable model for breast health education in the Charotar region.

This awareness drive aligns with national health initiatives like Ayushman Bharat, ensuring that women's health remains a priority in rural areas. The program not only raised health consciousness but also encouraged proactive health management, creating a lasting impact on breast health education and screening accessibility.
