How would you react if you received a phone call claiming that you had been awarded the Nobel Prize? Structural biologist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan couldn't believe that he had been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In October 13 years ago, Ramakrishnan was in a bad mood as his day had not started well. His bike had gotten a flat tire on his way to work which caused him to arrive late to his office at University of Cambridge.

Just as he arrived at the office the telephone rang: “This is an important phone call from Stockholm – please hold.” He answered angrily: “Whoever put you up to this – I don’t believe you!” The general secretary then came on to congratulate the newly awarded chemistry laureate, who still was very sceptical.

The general secretary tried to convince him that it was true but it wasn't until Ramakrishnan got to speak with the committee member Måns Ehrenberg (who he had met before) that he was convinced. He then heard the laughter in the background - he was on loud speaker...

She is the first scholar from our department to join as Assistant Professor at Raniganj Girls College, WB. From the family of Dept. of Microbiology we wish her all the best and thank her for making our dept. and Sikkim University proud.

On behalf of Department of Microbiology, we all the students and scholars are supporting our very own family member SAYAK DAS for the post of General Secretary for the upcoming SUSA elections. He is one of the most eligible candidates for the said post. He is experienced, sincere, honest, hard working and his most essential quality is that he respects all. He has a very strong vision to help others and make our university the best. In this university, all of the teaching staffs, non-teaching staffs, administrative staffs and also people beyond the university knows him very well. His social connectivity and communication skills are well recognized in the University and State of Sikkim also. He has been involved in many projects and surveys about the welfare of Sikkim.

We have been with him for so many years, and we strongly believe that he is someone who is reliable, is always approachable and one of the most responsible person. He is unbiased, has no political background, and is keen on learning. He is the first student of Sikkim University to have been awarded as "BEST STUDENT OF THE YEAR" ---- the only recipient of the award till date.

A university GOLD MEDALIST, who is also the first scholar from Sikkim University to win the most prestigious DST INSPIRE AWARD. He has received many university awards in various competitions like debate, quiz etc. Academically he is one of our stars who has kept the flag of Sikkim University flying high and his achievements has made Department of Microbiology always proud.

We have also seen him on grounds either playing or participating as volunteer in many academic or cultural or sports programmes of the university.

All in all, he is a complete package who has experience to work as GENERAL SECRETARY. He has seen many ups and downs of the university. He is a symbol of unity, integrity, success and honesty. He loves food, respects every culture and does not believe in the concept of regionalism. His only motto is WORK, WORK AND WORK.
