Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025 Concludes Successfully at Sikkim Government Law College, Gangtok
Date: 21st–23rd May 2025
Venue: Moot Court Hall, Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk, Gangtok

The Moot Court Committee and the Moot Court Society of Sikkim Government Law College (SGLC), Gangtok, successfully hosted a three-day Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025 from 21st to 23rd May 2025. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students who showcased their advocacy skills, legal drafting, and research skills among law students, fostering an environment of academic excellence and courtroom simulation.
This year’s Intra-Moot Court Competition was held as part of the celebrations marking 50 Years of Sikkim’s Statehood, under the overarching theme “Sunaulo, Samriddha, ani Samartha Sikkim”—symbolizing a Golden, Prosperous, and Capable Sikkim. The event aligned with the state’s vision of fostering youth participation, academic excellence, and civic awareness as integral pillars in building a vibrant and empowered society.

Day 1: Inauguration, Researcher’s Test, Draw of Lots & Exchange of Memorials
The event was inaugurated on 21st May 2025 with the commencement of the Researcher’s Test, a crucial component designed to assess research skills, critical analysis, and clarity in subject-matter of participating teams. The test was smoothly conducted under the supervision of:
• Dr. Sushma Sharma, Convenor, Moot Court Committee
• Dr. Shraddha Subedi, Member, Moot Court Committee
• Mr. Ajay Pradhan, Member, Moot Court Committee

Following the test, the Draw of Lots was conducted, wherein teams were randomly designated as either Petitioners or Respondents. The Exchange of Memorials between opposite teams.

Day 2: Quarter-Final and Semi-Final Rounds
On 22nd May 2025, the competition advanced to the Quarter-Final and Semi-Final rounds, held across multiple courtrooms. The Quarter-Finals featured eight teams competing simultaneously, judged on Confidence, Articulation, and Knowledge of Law. The esteemed panel of judges included:
• Courtroom 1: Ms. Jyoti S***a, Additional Public Prosecutor, District and Sessions Court, Gangtok, Sikkim
• Courtroom 2: Mr. Sajal Sharma, Advocate, High Court of Sikkim
• Courtroom 3: Mr. Pramit Chettri, Advocate, High Court of Sikkim
• Courtroom 4: Mr. Kazi Sangay Thendup, Advocate, High Court of Sikkim.

The top four teams advanced to the Semi-Finals,

Day 3: Final Round and Valedictory Ceremony
The Final Round, held on 23rd May 2025, marked the culmination of the competition. It was judged by Mr. Bhusan Sharma, Advocate, High Court of Sikkim and Mr. Pramit Chettri, Advocate, High Court of Sikkim.
The two top teams were:
• Team SK/SEM/0038: Aditii S***a, Rhezalme Lepcha, Samyoma Limboo
• Team SK/SEM/0050: Pratham Sharma, Arpita S***a, Mohan Kumar Bhattarai

• Best Researcher Award: Rhezalme Lepcha
• Best Memorial Award: Team SK/SEM/0044 – Preeti Kumari, Isneha Tamang, Merry Hangma
• Best Speaker Award: Aditii S***a

The event concluded with a valedictory session and Prize distributing ceremony. The event was graced by Learned Advocate , High Court of Sikkim Mr. M. N. Dhungel, Mr. Bhusan Sharma and Mr. Pramit Chettri who praised the participants ‘efforts and encourage them to pursue excellence in law.
The Moot Court Committee and the Moot Court Society, Sikkim Government Law College expresses deepest gratitude to Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, Principal, Sikkim Government Law College and Dr. Dilip Pandey, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Sikkim Government Law College for their unwavering support in making the Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025 a resounding success. The event provided an invaluable platform for budding legal professionals to develop and showcase their advocacy skills.
The Committee extends its sincere thanks to Dr. Sonam Diki Dolma Bhutia, Senior Assistant Professor, and Dr. Deepankar Rai, Assistant Professor, for their valuable assistance in conducting the Researchers Test. A special mention is made of Dr. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia, Assistant Professor, for meticulously tabulating the scores during the event.
The Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025 concluded successfully on a high note, leaving a lasting note on all the participants and students. The institutions plans to continue hosting such events to provide stud ents with opportunities to develop their legal skills and knowledge.

Report on the Commencement of Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025

The Moot Court Committee of Sikkim Government Law College officially inaugurated the Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025 on 21st May 2025. The event marked the beginning of a three-day legal exercise designed to hone the advocacy, research, and drafting skills of participating students, fostering a spirit of healthy academic competition and courtroom simulation.

1. Researcher’s Test
The day’s proceedings commenced with the Researcher’s Test, an essential component of the competition, aimed at assessing the legal research acumen, analytical reasoning, and conceptual clarity of the team researchers. The test was meticulously conducted by:
• Dr. Sushma Sharma, Convenor, Moot Court Society
• Dr. Shraddha Subedi, Member, Moot Court Society
• Mr. Ajay Pradhan, Member, Moot Court Society

The Moot Court Society extends its special thanks to:
• Dr. Sonam Diki Dolma Bhutia, Senior Assistant Professor, SGLC
• Dr. Deepankar Rai, Assistant Professor, SGLC
For their invaluable assistance in facilitating the smooth conduct of the Researcher’s Test.
Additionally, sincere appreciation is extended to Dr. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia, Assistant Professor, SGLC, for diligently undertaking the responsibility as the Tabulator for the Intra-Moot Court Competition 2025.

2. Draw of Lots
Subsequent to the Researcher’s Test, the Draw of Lots was conducted. Participating teams were randomly assigned their positions as either Petitioners or Respondents, along with the identification of their opposing teams, thereby setting the stage for the oral rounds.

3. Exchange of Memorials
In adherence to fair trial principles and procedural symmetry, memorials prepared by the teams were formally exchanged with their respective opponents. This exchange enabled all participants to review the pleadings and arguments of the opposite side, facilitating thorough preparation for the oral rounds.

The Moot Court Committee places on record its gratitude to:
Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, Principal, Sikkim Government Law College and Dr. Dilip Pandey, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Sikkim Government Law College for granting the necessary permissions and extending their continued support towards the successful organisation of the competition.
With the preliminary and semi-final rounds scheduled for 22nd May 2025, and the final round followed by the Valedictory Ceremony on 23rd May 2025, the Committee anticipates a high standard of mooting and courtroom decorum in the days ahead.

The event promises to be a rigorous academic endeavor and an excellent platform for students to demonstrate their legal aptitude, advocacy, and teamwork.

REPORT ON THE ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ORGANISED BY THE MOOT COURT SOCIETY AND THE MOOT COURT COMMITTEE

The Moot Court Society (MCS) and the Moot Court Committee of Sikkim Government Law College, Burtuk with the prior permission of the Principal Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama and the thorough support and coordination from both the Principal and Dean, Dr. Dilip Pandey organised an orientation programme for the junior students on 08/10/2024 to introduce them to the concept of mooting, its significance in legal education, and the opportunities available through the society. The programme aimed at encouraging juniors to actively participate in upcoming mooting activities and competitions.
Objective of the Programme
The primary objectives of the orientation programme were:
• To familiarize the juniors with the workings of the Moot Court Society.
• To explain the importance of mooting in developing legal skills such as research, argumentation, and public speaking.
• To provide an overview of various national and international moot court competitions.
• To motivate students to participate in moots and other related activities.
• To provide guidance on how to prepare for moot court competitions.
Introduction to mooting:
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Convenor of the Moot Court Committee, Dr. Sushma Sharma who emphasized the role of mooting in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application in law. She highlighted the significance of legal research and advocacy skills that are refined through participation in moot courts.

Following the welcome address, the President of the Moot Court Society, Ms. Sonali Mukhia,student , 5th Year, provided an in-depth introduction to mooting. She explained the structure of moot court competitions, including:
Memorial Preparation: Writing a well-researched memorial as part of the competition.
Oral Arguments: Presenting legal arguments before a bench of judges.
Team Collaboration: The importance of working as a team in a moot court competition.
Intra-college Moot Court Competitions: Opportunities for new members to practice in a competitive yet supportive environment.
External Moot Competitions: Guidance and financial support provided by the society for participating in national and international moots.
In her address, the President also acknowledged the contributions of the Moot Court Society and highlighted the key roles of the faculty members involved. She specifically recognized Dr. Sushma Sharma, the Faculty Convenor, Dr.Shraddha Subedi and Dr.Ajay Pradhan, the Co-Convenors for the Moot Court Society and Moot Court Committee, for their dedication and guidance in supporting the society’s activities and initiatives.
She also shared her own experience of participating in national and international moot competitions, inspiring juniors to explore similar opportunities.

Following the President’s speech, the Vice President of the Moot Court Society, Mr. Mahesh Chettri,student, 4th Year, shared his own experience of participating in the international national and regional moot court competitions, inspiring and motivating juniors to participate in the
similar opportunities and extended his support towards the juniors and committed to help them in tackling the moot problems and drafting memorials.

Following the speeches of the President and Vice President, the Treasurer cm Research Head of the Moot Court Society, Ms. Binita Kumari Prasad, student, 5th Year, took the stage to share her personal mooting experience. She highlighted her journey from preparing memorials to arguing before a panel of judges in both national and international moots, and how these experiences have shaped her legal career. She also spoke about what are the problems the participants are going to face while participating in the moot competitions and also provided solutions to solve those problems and also stretched her speech on coordination amongst the team members and highlighted the drawbacks of lack of coordination amongst the team members if they are participating in the moot competition.

Conclusion:
The orientation programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Member of Research Wing of the Moot Court Society, Mr. Durga Prashad Bhandari, student, 2nd Year. He appreciated the juniors’ enthusiasm and expressed hope that many would join the society and represent the college in various moot court competitions.

Outcome:
The orientation programme was a resounding success, as it motivated almost 80- 100 students from 1st, 3rd and 5th Semester to explore the world of mooting and become active members of the Moot Court Society. The juniors left with a deeper understanding of the importance of mooting in legal education and career development.

OFFICIAL BADGING CEREMONY OF THE EXECUTIVE BODY OF THE MOOT COURT SOCIETY BY THE MOOT COURT COMMITTEE!!!
Today, i.e. 15/06/2023, the moot court committee of Sikkim Government Law College organised it’s official badging ceremony of the Executive Body of the Moot Court Society.
The badges were given by the Principal, SGLC and Miss. Tshering Choden Bhutia, Convener, Moot Court Society. It also observed the presence of Mr. Lahang Limboo, former President of Moot Court Society.
On 05/04/2023, an open notice was circulated by the Moot Court Society which invited nominations for the moot court society membership and various Executive posts like President, Vice President, General Secretary, Treasurer, Semester Convenors. 20 students had submitted their names for the same.
The moot court society has duly assigned the following students for different posts:
1- President- Mr. Dipendra Chettri- X sem
2- Vice President- Miss. Yachna Sharma – VIII Sem
3- General Secretary- Miss. Anisha Chettri- VI Sem
4- Treasurer- Miss. Roshika Dhungel- VI Sem

One day orientation was set up on Moot Court by the Sikkim Government Law College Moot Court Society in co-ordination with Moot Court Committee at Moot Court hall, SGLC.

The orientation was set up for the students of 3rd Semester, 5th Semester and 7th Semester of Sikkim Government Law College under the guidance of Ms. Tshering Choden Bhutia, Convener, Moot Court Society, Ms. Sushma Sharma, Co-Convener, Moot Court Society, Ms. Binita Pradhan, Co-Convener, Moot Court Society.
The Orientation included the speakers from 9th Semester as follows:
1-Mr.Adarsh Gurung who spoke on “Introduction and Importance of Mooting”
2- Mr.Dipendra Chettri who emphasised on Structure of moot and Organising the event
3-Mr. Sonam Nichen Thendup Bhutia who laid emphasis on Preparations for moot competition.
4-Mr. Dev Narayan Pradhan who taught the students how to draft memorials and laid emphasis on formatting technicalities.

Lastly, Miss. Tshering Choden Bhutia, Convener, MCS; Miss. Sushma Sharma, Co-Convener, MCS; Miss. Binita Pradhan, Co-Convener, MCS talked about the importance of Mooting for law students, they also laid emphasis on how practical experience also plays role in the journey of law profession and encouraged students to participate in the upcoming Moot Court Competitions.

The Moot Court Society of Sikkim Government Law College successfully launched its logo and badge!

On 15th July, 2022 (Friday), the logo and Badges of the Moot Court Society, Sikkim Government Law College were successfully launched.

The logo launching was carried out by Dr. T.D. Lama, Principal, SGLC and Ms. Lalita Chettri, State NSS Officer, Govt.of Sikkim, during the Skit Competition organised by NSS Cell, Sikkim Government Law College.

The badges were presented to the Chief Guest Ms. Lalita Chettri, State NSS Officer, Govt.of Sikkim and Dr. T.D. Lama, Principal, Sikkim Government Law College, by the Executive members of the Moot Court Society followed by Badging Ceremony of all Executive Members of Moot Court Society by Dr. T.D. Lama, who congratulated the entire Moot Court Society for the successful launch of logo and badge.

SGLC bags best Memorial award at 5th National Moot Court Competition organized by Amity Law School.

A team comprising of Mr. Lahang Limboo, Mr. Dipendra Chettri and Mr. Dev Narayan Pradhan students 4th Year, Sikkim Government Law College won the best memorial award at the 5th National Moot Court Competition organized by Amity Law School. The team also qualified for quarter finals placing SGLC among the top 8 teams at National level.

The entire SGLC family is delighted with such an achievement at National level.

The Moot Court Society, SGLC congratulates the entire team and wishes each member luck for future endeavours as well.
