Sikkim University at IAMCR 2025, Singapore

Ph.D. scholar Ikla S***a & Dr. Pooja Basnett from the Dept. of Mass Communication presented a paper titled “Indigenous Battle Over Cultural Beliefs: A Study of the Mukkumlung Protests for Environmental Protection in Nepal” at the IAMCR 2025 Conference, held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore
Their work highlighted indigenous resistance and cultural beliefs in environmental activism, aligning with the conference theme “Communicating Environmental Justice: Many Voices, One Planet”. Their research sparked rich discussions on indigenous resistance, environmental justice, and the power of traditional knowledge blended with modern communication.
It was indeed a proud moment of global academic exchange — enriching, inspiring, and profoundly meaningful! Congratulations to Ikla S***a and Dr. Pooja Basnett on reaching this significant academic milestone!

A two-day workshop on Review Paper titled “Writing and Publishing Review Papers: Understanding Typologies, Mastering Skills”, orgainsed by the Department on March 21-22 for early-stage and advanced level doctoral scholars, saw overwhelming response not just from participants from various departments of Silkim University but also from across the country. Prof. (Dr.) Shri Ram, Head Librarian, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, an expert in the field with more than 65 indexed publications (including an impressive number of review papers), was the resource person in the workshop. The workshop was co-ordinated by Dr Manoj Kumar Das, faculty in the Department, ably assisted by Ms. Trishna Mangar, a scholar in the Department. Despite power disruptions and internet issues in Gangtok, particularly on the last day of the workshop that required rescheduling of the last session, participants’ attendance and their curiosity to learn was undeterred. They were highly appreciative of the insights, resources and skills provided in the workshop. Apart from various types, tools and techniques of reviewing paper that participants learnt, they also got a sense of how both digital skills and intellectual depth and creativity are essential for the new age literature review. Certificate were later distributed to all participants.

The much-awaited three-day workshop on Filmmaking and Direction with Ace-Director Samten Bhutia, organised by the Department of Mass Communication, Sikkim University from the 17th to 19th March ended with an air of jubilation and success. The workshop was organized with a view to provide hands-on-training to the students on the art of filmmaking and direction. Coordinated by Dr Niharika Buragohain, Assistant Professor, and ably assisted by Dorjee Sherpa our Technical Assistant, the workshop provided three days of rigorous training to the students by the much-acclaimed director and his team that comprised of Moni Raj Paudel (Chief Assistant Director) and Binesh Rai (Cinematographer). The engaging sessions saw the students work from early morning till midnight, they were exposed to the cumbersome and challenging work environment of the filmmaking process. Well acclaimed for films like Naya Disha (2000), Naango Dhaadh (2003), Masked Fair (2003), Letter (2009), Taandro (2015) and Tara: The Lost Star (2024), Mr Samten Bhutia has contributed immensely to the growth of regional films in both Sikkim and Nepal. His last film Tara was selected for the prestigious Marche du Film at the Cannes Film Festival. For the students, it was a lifetime opportunity to learn filming and even acting from such an experienced and well-known film personality.

On March 11, 2025, II Semester Mass Communication students, led by Dr. Pooja Basnett, visited the District and Sessions Court and the Gangtok District Administrative Centre as part of their Media Laws and Ethics course to gain firsthand experience of the legal and administrative systems.The students engaged in an interactive session with District Magistrate (DM) and District Collector (DC) of Gangtok District, Shri Tushar Gajanan Nikhare, IAS who discussed career opportunities in mass communication and encouraged student participation in district programs. He also emphasized plans to invite local talents, entrepreneurs, and professionals for interactive sessions with students. Additionally, he spoke about the ‘Sun Talks’ program, a motivational initiative of District Administrative Centre in collaboration with Sun Pharma, and expressed hope that such sessions could be extended to Sikkim University as well. At the court, ex-student Chewang Tashi Bhutia, now a court stenographer, guided the students and provided valuable insights into court proceedings and judicial processes, giving them a closer look at courtroom dynamics, case handling, decision-making and media reporting.This visit provided students with a better understanding of the judiciary procedure, legal reporting, governance, and the media’s role in shaping public discourse on social and administrative issues.

The Department congratulates it’s ex- scholar Dr Arkaprava Chattopadhyay for his remarkable publication in the prestigious Anthropological Notebooks, a Scopus and Web of Science indexed and open access journal administered by Slovene Anthropological Society in Europe. Dr Arkaprava’s paper is based on one of the chapters in his doctoral thesis, supervised by Dr Manoj Kumar Das. Another proud moment for the Department as well as the University. The Department welcomes back its MA Semester III batch after their return from a very well planned and successful Study Tour to Rajasthan from September 26 to October 6. Accompanied by faculty member Dr Pooja Basnett, the students explored the rich tapestry of cultural, historical and media landscapes of the state.Their learning from the visit to the vibrant cities of Jodhpur, Jaipur, and the desert town of Osian was immense. They explored iconic landmarks like Mehrangarh Fort, Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, and Amer Fort. Their engagement with the state’s local culture by undertaking camel safaris, participating in Rajasthani folk music and dance performances, trying out local cuisines was very enriching. The visit to the Jaipur’s Dainik Bhaskar print unit, where students learned the intricacies of newspaper production, was an insightful experience. The enriching cultural exchange at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Rajasthan University added immense value to the Beyond-the-Classroom Learning initiative of the Department.

The Department of Mass Communication, Sikkim University congratulates its PhD scholars Ugyal Tshering Lama Yolmo and Smriti Rai for being conferred their doctoral degrees after successfully defending their theses on August 12th and 13th, 2024, respectively. Congratulations to Dr Pooja Basnett as well for supervising both the scholars. Dr. Ugyal's thesis is titled “A Study of the Political Awareness, Utilization of Media Platforms, and Participation in the Political Process by the Students of Higher Educational Institutes in Sikkim”. Dr. Smriti Rai’s thesis is titled “An Analysis of the Portrayal of Identity in Hindi Crime Genre Web Series in India”. Both works demonstrate their scholarly excellence and profound commitment to the fields of Mass Communication. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to both scholars on their achievements and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

PROUD MOMENT: It is quite an occasion for the Department of Mass Communication, Sikkim University that three of its students contributed immensely to the making of first ever Nepali film from India that made it to the Cannes this year! Tara’s co-actor Sushmita Bhujel and Assistant Directors Binod Chhetri (ext. left) and Sai Priya Tamang (ext. right) posing for the photo with Department’s Head/IC Dr Manoj K Das and Technical Assistant Dorjee Sherpa Pinnasa soon after the premier at Bajra Cinema Hall yesterday. The Dept. is indeed proud of you guys! The film is to be released across the country on June 14th.

The Department congratulates its ex-student Sushmita Bhujel (MA batch 2020-22) for being featured on the pre-launch poster of the Nepali film Tara: The Lost Star— the first ever film from Sikkim to be nominated at the Cannes this year. Sushmita (as Manita in the film) played the role of the best friend of the lead actor. She debuted in acting earlier in the movie Jaar, followed by Guras —both to be released soon. The Department also congratulates two of its students, Binod Chettri ( PhD scholar) and Sai Priya Tamang ( MA batch 2020-22), for their roles as Assistant Director in the highly acclaimed film. The Department welcomes back and congratulates first-semester student Tulsi Chettri for her splendid role at the five-day Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Experimental Learning Program at Auroville Foundation, Puducherry held from 29 January to 2 February, 2024.

Tulsi had the rare honour of presenting a bouquet to Telengana Governor and Puducherry LG Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan (seen in the picture) on behalf of all the visiting participants representing various universities from other Indian states. She also compered for the evening cultural events every day.

Tulsi was part of the 14-member student team from Sikkim University that visited Puducherry and represented the University at the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme. SU students proudly showcased the cultural richness of the region through group and solo performances. Tulsi comes back with a lot of learning and experiences!
