It is indeed a proud moment for all of us at Sikkim University that Gnersongmit Lepcha, an alumna of the Department of Lepcha, was part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police All-Women Mount Everest Expedition 2026. She successfully reached the summit of the world’s highest peak on May 21 along with eleven other climbers.

According to ITBP officials, the expedition marked a historic milestone as the first-ever all-women team to scale Mount Everest (8,848 metres) via the challenging South Col Route, with the first summit recorded at 6:52 AM. Her extraordinary achievement is a matter of immense pride not only for the Department of Lepcha but for the entire university community.
