Empowering Minds: SERB-Funded Science Camp Enlightens Upgraded High School Parsawan, Students on Biotechnology for Community

In an effort to spark young minds and foster a deeper understanding of biotechnology among Upgraded High School students, Parsawan, Gaya, the Department of Biotechnology at CUSB, with generous funding from SERB (Science and Engineering Research Board), India, organized an enriching science camp. Held under the theme 'Science for Community,' the camp aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications of biotechnology. This program was organized by Dr. Nitish Kumar, Associate Professor and Project Investigator of the Department of Biotechnology under the aegis of his research project “Development of in vitro regeneration protocol for genetic improvement of Makhana (Euryale ferox Salisbury): A Neglected and Underutilized Food Crop”.

Under the program, Dr. Nitish Kumar took the school students on a tour of the laboratories to increase their interest in science. He briefed them about the objectives of the research project. He educates the students about SERB, how research projects are conducted, and how these projects are useful for society.

The inaugural session commenced with an insightful lecture by Dr. Nitish Kumar, shedding light on the role of SERB and extending a warm welcome to the eager school students. The entire faculty of the department graced the occasion, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing the budding scientists of tomorrow.

Setting the tone for the camp, Prof. Rizwanul Haque, Dean of the Earth, biological, and environmental science, captivated the audience with a higher studies and research are crucial for India to become self-reliant in medicine manufacturing. We currently import many medicines, but with a focus R and D, we can produce them locally. Through his elucidation, the students were not only acquainted with scientific history but also inspired to follow in the footsteps of eminent scientists.

Guiding the proceedings as the camp coordinator, Prof. Rakesh Kumar, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, blends a series of engaging activities aimed at providing practical insights into various facets of biotechnology.

Dr. Nitish lecture on the ubiquitous presence of biotechnology in our daily lives resonated deeply with the students. From the preparation of everyday essentials like herbs, animal, and medicinal plant products (such as makhana) to laboratory visits showcasing ongoing experiments and familiarizing students with cutting-edge instruments, every aspect of the discipline is covered.

He elucidated how biotechnology serves as the bedrock of modern conveniences, making our lives easier and our nation greater. Moreover, he shed light on knowledge is plentiful, but it's crucial to deepen and focus on what you gain, which truly matters. Throughout the camp, the students exhibited boundless curiosity and enthusiasm, peppering the lecturers with a myriad of thought-provoking questions. Their inquisitiveness was not only rewarded but also encouraged, underscoring the camp's commitment to fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

In recognition of their active participation and insightful queries, students were felicitated during question-answer sessions, further fueling their passion for science and instilling confidence in their abilities.

As the curtains drew on the SERB-funded science camp, it left an indelible mark on the students of UHS Parsawan, Gaya, instilling in them a newfound appreciation for the wonders of biotechnology and igniting their aspirations to contribute meaningfully to the scientific community. Through hands-on learning experiences and inspirational lectures, the camp not only empowered young minds but also reinforced the vital role of biotechnology in building a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
