Global Music Institute Bringing a distinctive and modern approach to music education in India. musician.

Tarun Balani and Aditya Balani founded Global Music Institute (GMI) in 2011 with the mission of bringing a distinctive and modern approach to music education to India. Through a comprehensive music curriculum that includes the core aspects of music (music theory, harmony and ear training), ensemble lessons and workshops, instrumental lessons and performance as well as Indian classical and folk music; GMI incorporates modern classroom teaching techniques to give students an in-depth view of music subjects. It also offers music technology and business management, which GMI believes are essential for todays working musician. GMI is also the only official teacher of the Berklee College of Music, USA, Curriculum in India. Over its semesters, the Institute invites a diverse international faculty from various stylistic and cultural backgrounds to be able to provide students with opportunities to explore the diversity of expression that defines today’s music industry. The larger goal of GMI is to also foster a music community that brings together artists to work collaboratively and be able to fully express and realize their musical vision. GMI has a diverse international faculty coming from various stylistic and cultural backgrounds. Private lessons, music forums, ensemble workshops, and performances by faculty and visiting artists will broaden the student's perspective and foster the spirit of musical and personal growth.

Behind every performance is a life that continues long after the lights go down.

For musicians and gig curators, the work can mean unpredictable incomes, constant comparison, blurred boundaries between work and personal life, pressure to keep creating, and the emotional weight of whether a show, song, or opportunity succeeds.

In part 2 of the Behind the Spotlight series, senjuti looks at the experiences that often remain out of sight — including the gendered challenges, discrimination, and lack of recognition that shape life in India’s independent music industry.

Through conversations with musicians and gig curators across the country, Behind the Spotlight asks us to look beyond the romance of the artist’s life and consider the realities of the people sustaining India’s music ecosystems.

India’s independent music scene is full of passion, creativity, and people determined to build something meaningful — but behind the music, the realities can be far less glamorous: unstable incomes, scarce venues, limited infrastructure, delayed payments, gatekeeping, and unequal access to opportunities.

In this new GMI Blog, senjuti looks beyond the spotlight, speaking to musicians and gig curators across the country about the ecosystems they are building, the barriers they face, and what it really takes to sustain a life in music.

From making your own spaces to finding ways to keep going, the conversations reveal both the challenges and the possibilities for India’s independent music ecosystems.

This one brings Maya Bajaj Maya and Sohaib Durrani Sohaib together for their rendition of The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli and Céline Dion, accompanied by Naushad Noushad Ashraf on the piano and production by Bharat Jain Bharat Jain.

It’s a song they both grew up singing and later bonded over, so taking on a classic this beloved felt equal parts exciting and daunting. With their backgrounds in opera and classical singing, getting to finally interpret it together made this one especially close to heart. 🤍

GMI Jukebox Vol. 16 is here, and somehow this one still feels like sunshine, even with all the rain!

“Feel It” is an original by GMI alums Rishi Pawa, A***n Mehta, and Sohum Basu, a track that began the way some of the best songs do, in a room, with friends, with no big plan except to make something that feels good.

What started as a fun session at home slowly turned into a full track, with A***n on vocals, Rishi shaping the sound through recording and mix, and Sohum bringing in the guitar.
The result? A bright, electro-forward original that sounds like it was made for long drives, late sunsets, and the part of summer you wish could last a little longer.

We had a lot of fun shooting this one, and we’re so excited for you to hear it.

There’s always plenty to celebrate about on the Ensemble Showcase day.

After a whole semester of rehearsing, refining, figuring things out, and building trust with each other, the music finally gets to meet a room full of people. And that room matters, parents, family, friends, faculty, all showing up with so much love and energy. It nourishes all of us.

A big thank you to our mentors Priyana Chauhan Priyana Chauhan, Siddharth Gautam Siddharth Gautam, André Grabois André Grabois, Lucas Fixel Lucas Fixel, and Vatsal Bakhda Vatsal Bakhda for guiding the students through it all.

The full aftermovie is now up on our YouTube channel. Go watch it back with us 💛
