Department of Botany, Handique Girls' College The Department of Botany is the oldest department in the science stream of Handique Girls' College, established in the academic year 1944–45.

The students of FYUGP 4th Semester, Department of Botany, undertook an industry visit to Prataap Snacks Pvt Ltd., located at Amingaon, Guwahati, Assam-781031 on 28th April, 2026.

The visit provided students with an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to industrial processes involved in food production and packaging. During the visit, the students were introduced to various stages of snack manufacturing, quality control measures, hygiene standards and modern machinery used in large-scale production.

The interaction with industry professionals helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, giving students valuable insights into career opportunities and industrial practices.

The Department expresses its sincere gratitude to the management and staff of Prataap Snacks Pvt Ltd. for their cooperation and for facilitating an informative and enriching learning experience for the students.

The Department of Botany, Handique Girls’ College successfully organized an insightful talk on “Scientific Documentation and Validation of IKS with special reference to Plant Resources of NE India” on 30th April, 2026 at the Department premises.

The talk was conducted in hybrid mode, embracing the concept of blended learning and was exclusively organized for the students of the Department of Botany, ensuring focused academic engagement.

The session was delivered by Dr. Shivaji Chaudhry, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Madhya Pradesh, who served as the Resource Person for the programme. He shared valuable perspectives on the importance of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), emphasizing the need for systematic scientific documentation and validation of traditional plant-based knowledge prevalent in North-East India.

The programme witnessed active participation from students and faculty members, followed by an engaging interactive session where queries and ideas were exchanged.

The Department expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Chaudhry for his enlightening talk and to all participants for making the programme a success.

The students of FYUGP 4th Semester, Department of Botany visited Angel's Fresh Mushroom Farm, Kulhati, Hajo on 28.04.2026. They attended a hands-on training on mushroom cultivation, which was conducted as a part of the Certificate Course on "Mushroom Cultivation" offered by the department. Ms. Latika Deka, proprietor of the farm, provided detailed knowledge to the students about different cultivation techniques, including substrate preparation, proper maintenance, and food value. She also guided the entire process, making it easy to understand and practical to apply. The workshop was very fruitful, and the Department of Botany is very grateful to Latika Deka and her team for providing a well-planned, systematic, and resourceful training program.

The Department of Botany and Zoology, Handique Girls' College, are delighted to share the successful completion of the 30-Hour Course on "Basic Bioinformatics Applications", conducted under the MeitY, Government of India-funded project “Smart Bioinformatics Ecosystem: Leveraging AI and Cloud Technology for Innovation and Capacity Building in Bioinformatics”, organized by NIELIT Guwahati.

The course was held from 23rd February to 1st March 2026 in both online and offline modes, covering comprehensive theoretical and hands-on sessions on sequence alignment, BLAST & FASTA, multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic analysis, biomolecular structures, PyMOL/Chimera visualization and protein structure validation .

We are proud to announce that 82 students successfully completed the course. The Valedictory Session and Certificate Distribution Ceremony was held on 01.03.2026 at the premises of Handique Girls’ College, celebrating the dedication and enthusiasm of the participants.

The Department of Botany, Handique Girls’ College is pleased to share that Dr. Pranab Bujarbarua, Associate Professor & HOD, Department of Botany, acted as the Resource Person in the workshop on “Preparation of Eco-friendly Holi Colours” organized by the Eco Club of B. Borooah College in association with ASTEC under its Environmental Education Programme, on 27th February 2026. Dr. Bujarbarua delivered a lecture on the “Importance of use of natural materials for preparation of eco-friendly colours for Holi”.

Seven students of FYUGP 2nd Semester from the department of Botany, Handique Girls' College actively participated in the workshop and gained valuable hands-on experience in preparing eco-friendly colours using natural raw materials.

The Department of Botany and Zoology, Handique Girls’ College, in collaboration of Department of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics with the support of IQAC of the College has organized the National Science Day, 2026 on the theme “Women in science catalyzing Viksit Bharat” at the college premises. Padma shri Jadev Payeng, “Forest Man of India” was the Chief guest, Dr. Shakeel Zamal, Associate Professor and Vice Principal of the college acted as the Resource person of the Programme.

The programme started with the welcome speech by Dr. Pori Hiloidari, IQAC coordinator, Handique Girls college. Dr. Zamal delivered the lecture on the theme of the science day and addressed the gathering on the life and lessons of C.V. Raman and his novel discovery on the Raman effect.

Dr. Dip Jyoti Haloi, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology and the Co-ordinator of the event introduced and highlighted the achievements of the Padma Shri Jadav Payeng.

Padma Shri Jadev Payeng enlightened the students for moving towards “Green Earth” with a special emphasis on “Green India”. He disseminated his lifelong knowledge and experience to the students. He urged the students to find the career in administration and policy making services, so that they can devote themselves towards sustainable growth of the nation. He emphasized on the traditional knowledge of the people of Northeast India and immediate implementation of such knowledge for the conservation of rich biodiversity of this region.

The students had an active interactive session with the Dr. Payeng followed by a play entitled ‘Green Dream in the Laboratory’ staged by the volunteers of NSS of the college.

The chief guest also inaugurated the first edition of the bulletin “The Fauna Vista” and the “Museum of Faunal Diversity” of the Department of Zoology.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Sadiqul Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany. The programme was attended by faculty members and students from various departments of the college, making the celebration a meaningful and inspiring event.

We are happy to share that nine students from the 4th Semester Major actively took part in the Workshop on Sustainable Bioengineering held on 18 February 2026 at B. Borooah College (Autonomous). The workshop centered on the theme “Bioengineering: Concepts, Scope, and Practical Applications,” emphasizing the importance of aligning scientific research with the principles of sustainable development.

The programme included insightful expert lectures along with hands-on sessions conducted by distinguished resource persons from IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, NIPER-Guwahati and B. Borooah College. The sessions introduced students to a wide range of interdisciplinary topics such as nanotechnology, synthetic biology, advanced medicines, robotics and applied physics, making the experience both informative and inspiring.
