Twenty-five years after graduating, the Class of 2001 returned to IIT Guwahati to revisit memories, and to engage with today's students and faculty. They reflected on how a young Institute shaped their journeys and how the next generation can shape its future.

Held from 30 July–1 August, Smriti 2026 brought together alumni for interactions with Institute leadership, faculty and students, departmental visits, and conversations on innovation, entrepreneurship, and the evolving academic ecosystem at IIT Guwahati.

Faculty and alumni reflected together on the Institute's formative years, recalling the shared experience of building careers alongside a young and rapidly growing campus. They recalled old nicknames, and the senate hall rang with the laughter of people who had gone back in time by 25 years.

Members of the Class of 2001 also shared stories of initiative and perseverance. They visited the departments where they worked with a hunger to prove themselves. They recalled taking a handmade robot to IIT Bombay's technical festival before helping establish Techniche, IIT Guwahati's own technical festival—an event that has continued for 27 years and today welcomes tens of thousands of participants.

Guru Pūrṇimā Celebrations at IIT Guwahati

The Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems (CIKS), IIT Guwahati, in association with the Yoga Club and the Youth Empowerment Club, celebrated Guru Pūrṇimā with a series of events highlighting the rich legacy of the guru–śiṣya tradition and the contributions of India's knowledge traditions.

Dedicated to Bhagavān Veda Vyāsa, revered as the World's Greatest Knowledge Architect, the celebration recognised his monumental role as the compiler of the Vedas, author of the Brahma Sūtras, composer of the Mahābhārata, and compiler of the Aṣṭādaśa Purāṇas. His work laid the foundation for preserving and transmitting Indian Knowledge Systems across generations.

A major attraction of the event was the "Know Your Gurus" Exhibition, which showcased eminent gurus from diverse fields of knowledge, including Kātyāyana in mathematics, Bharata Muni in performing arts, Vidura in leadership, Chanakya in political thought, Suśruta in medicine, Viśvakarma in architecture, and the six classical Darśanas of Indian philosophy.

The programme featured three special lectures. Shri Raghu Anantha Narayanan Ji delivered "Veda Vyāsa: The World's Greatest Knowledge Architect." Prof. Kameshwar Shukla spoke on "Mahābhārata: Lessons for Students," while Prof. Uppuluri from the Department of Chemical Engineering addressed the significance of Guru Pūrṇimā and engaged students in a discussion on the Bhagavad Gītā and its relevance to student life.

The celebration also included Poetry Writing and Poster Making competitions. Avani Bhargav received the Best Poem award, while Sakshi Gujjar won the Best Poster award.

The exhibition was graced by Prof. Uday Shanker Dixit, Head, Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, along with the Registrar, faculty members, research scholars, staff, and students from across IIT Guwahati.

The organizing team, Dasari Narasimha (Yoga Club), Jaya Bharti Singh (Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems), and Devyani (Youth Empowerment Club), expresses its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this celebration possible.

Ashwin Mahavadi (Civil Engg, Batch of 2009), SVP, Skyroot Aerospace, was on campus last week, days after Skyroot made India the third country in the world with a private orbital launch company.

His advice to students? "Build more." Go deep in your discipline, but pick up the basics across others disciplines to build real systems engineering capability.

During the Q&A that followed students asked him about preparing themselves for careers in deep tech, in entrepreneurship and about the scale of space research opportunities in India.
