🌿 Student Seminar | Research Paper Presentation Series 2026 – Series II Begins! 🔬📚

The second series of the Student Seminar on Phylogenomics and Paleobotany began on 23 September 2026 in the Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), with two engaging research paper presentations by students of FYUGP 5th Semester Core – BT-CE-5334: Phylogenomics and Paleobotany.

As part of the practical component of the course, the Research Paper Presentation Series 2026 features eight research and review papers published in prestigious international journals. The selected papers serve as case studies to help students explore concepts from their syllabus while developing skills in scientific reading, presentation, interpretation and academic discussion.

Both presentations were held in the Departmental Laboratory, with students exploring contemporary research related to plant evolution, phylogeny, flowering plants, pollination and vascular plant biodiversity.

The series is designed not merely as a presentation exercise, but as an opportunity for students to read beyond the textbook, engage with original scientific literature, communicate research findings and learn through discussion with their peers.

✨ Two groups. Two research papers. One beginning to a semester-long journey through contemporary plant science.

Report on Online Talk: “Fossils: A Window into the Past"
The Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, organized an online talk titled “Fossils: A Window into the Past” on 5 September 2026, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. via Google Meet.
The session was delivered by Ms. Nupur Rajkhowa, Geologist, Geological Survey of India, State Unit, Assam, Guwahati, and a member of the 2017 UPSC batch. Drawing from her extensive field experience, she provided an engaging introduction to fossils and the process of fossilization, highlighting their significance in understanding the history and evolution of life. The talk was particularly relevant to the Fifth Semester Core paper, Phylogenomics and Paleobotany.
The programme was attended by 56 students from different semesters of Botany, along with students of Geology and Anthropology. Ms. Rajkhowa displayed actual fossil specimens, including a dinosaur bone discovered by her, and shared fascinating field experiences. The highly interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from students, with their queries being addressed comprehensively. Her clear, calm and engaging presentation was greatly appreciated by the participants. E-certificates will be provided to the participants.
The Department gratefully acknowledges the support of the Principal, Arya Vidyapeeth College, and Dr. Nabin Saikia, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Botany. The Department of Botany Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous organized a special online class on Botanical Nomenclature on 12th May 2026 from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM for interested students. Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi coordinated the session in response to requests from students who wished to strengthen their understanding of nomenclature.
The session was conducted by Dr. Kanthraj A.S., a former Research Scholar of CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, and an expert in botanical nomenclature and taxonomy. He commenced the lecture with a lucid introduction to the Principles of the International Code of Nomenclature (ICN), highlighting their importance and application in plant taxonomy. He subsequently explained the various nomenclatural types in detail and illustrated the concepts with relevant examples, making the session highly engaging and easy for students to comprehend.
A total of 34 students from 4th Semester Core, 2nd Semester Core, and 2nd Semester Minor attended the session, as the topic forms an important component of their syllabus. The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating through questions and discussions to clarify their doubts. The participants also shared overwhelmingly positive feedback through the feedback form, reflecting the usefulness and effectiveness of the session.

Report on One-Day Hands-on Training on GIS and GPS

The Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous) Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous, organized a one-day hands-on training on GIS and GPS for FYUGP 6th Semester Core students on 4th April 2026 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Computer Lab 1.

The session was conducted by Ms. Suli Yohana Ayemi, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, whose dynamic, enthusiastic and student-friendly approach made the training highly engaging and effective. Students learned to prepare a map of India using Google Earth Pro and QGIS and locate various forest areas across the country. A total of 36 students participated, and the program was attended by all faculty members of the department. Feedback collected reflected a highly positive response. E-certificates will be issued soon.

The program was coordinated by Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, who extends sincere thanks to the Head of the Department, Dr. Nabin Saikia, for his support and guidance. Special thanks are also extended to Ms. Dhanashree Das, Computer Cell, for her assistance with computer systems and software setup.

Report on Participation in an International Conference on 13 and 14 March 2026

Students from the Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous College attended the International Conference on Environmental Challenges and Bioresource Innovations for a Sustainable Future (ICECBISF-2026), organized by the Department of Botany at B. Borooah College (Autonomous), Guwahati, on 13 and 14 March 2026, under the guidance of Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, AVC (A).
A total of 11 students participated in the conference, comprising 7 from the FYUGP 2nd Semester and 3 from the FYUGP 6th Semester. One student (Anushka Dey) from the 2025 batch presented her B.Sc. 6th Semester (CBCS) project paper titled “ *Digital Documentation and Diversity Assessment of Campus Flora at Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), Guwahati* ”, at this international conference.
The conference provided valuable academic exposure for the students and helped them gain insights into current research and scientific presentations in botany.

On 28 February 2026, on the occasion of National Science Day, Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College ( Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous ) in association with Vigyaan Alaap, a society promoting science and scientific temper celebrate the National science day
*Dr. Pritom Borthakur*, President of Vigyan Aalap, and Dr. Nabin Saikia and his departmental team comprising of Mr. Samrat Bora and Satya Nath Doley made a commendable effort to ignite scientific curiosity among the students of Arya Vidyapeeth. To mark the occasion, an Essay Competition and a Quiz Competition were organized.

Today Department of Botany organised Har Govind Khorana Memorial Lecture, 2026. The program started with offering of flowers to the portrait of Dr H R Khorana by the Principal of the Dr P K Bhattacharya, teachers and students. The invited speaker was Dr Manab Sharma, Former Adjunct Associate of Canberra University, Australia. He delivered a speech on Scientific Way of Exploring Plant World, followed by a detailed interactive session with students of the Department. The program was organised in the Conference Hall-2 of Arya Vidyapeeth College where a large number of students participated in the program. Before the Lecture program Prof. Har Govind Khurana was remembered in a speech about his life and work by Jaydeep Das, a student of Department from 6th Sem. Head of Department Dr N Saikia offered the vote of thanks. The program was co-ordinated by Dr P Devi of Dept of Botany.
