Report on One-Day Hands-on Training on GIS and GPS

The Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous) Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous, organized a one-day hands-on training on GIS and GPS for FYUGP 6th Semester Core students on 4th April 2026 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Computer Lab 1.

The session was conducted by Ms. Suli Yohana Ayemi, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, whose dynamic, enthusiastic and student-friendly approach made the training highly engaging and effective. Students learned to prepare a map of India using Google Earth Pro and QGIS and locate various forest areas across the country. A total of 36 students participated, and the program was attended by all faculty members of the department. Feedback collected reflected a highly positive response. E-certificates will be issued soon.

The program was coordinated by Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, who extends sincere thanks to the Head of the Department, Dr. Nabin Saikia, for his support and guidance. Special thanks are also extended to Ms. Dhanashree Das, Computer Cell, for her assistance with computer systems and software setup.

Report on Participation in an International Conference on 13 and 14 March 2026

Students from the Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous College attended the International Conference on Environmental Challenges and Bioresource Innovations for a Sustainable Future (ICECBISF-2026), organized by the Department of Botany at B. Borooah College (Autonomous), Guwahati, on 13 and 14 March 2026, under the guidance of Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, AVC (A).
A total of 11 students participated in the conference, comprising 7 from the FYUGP 2nd Semester and 3 from the FYUGP 6th Semester. One student (Anushka Dey) from the 2025 batch presented her B.Sc. 6th Semester (CBCS) project paper titled “ *Digital Documentation and Diversity Assessment of Campus Flora at Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous), Guwahati* ”, at this international conference.
The conference provided valuable academic exposure for the students and helped them gain insights into current research and scientific presentations in botany.

On 28 February 2026, on the occasion of National Science Day, Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College ( Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous ) in association with Vigyaan Alaap, a society promoting science and scientific temper celebrate the National science day
*Dr. Pritom Borthakur*, President of Vigyan Aalap, and Dr. Nabin Saikia and his departmental team comprising of Mr. Samrat Bora and Satya Nath Doley made a commendable effort to ignite scientific curiosity among the students of Arya Vidyapeeth. To mark the occasion, an Essay Competition and a Quiz Competition were organized.
It is a matter of great pride to announce the winners of the Quiz Competition:
🥇 *Arirudrajit Sen*& *Binod Sharma*(Department of Political Science) - ₹5,000 prize money
🥈 *Nichant T. Hussain* & *Dilip Kalita* (Department of Botany) - ₹3,000 prize money
🥉 *Nipu Moni Das* & *Rajdeep Barman* (Department of Botany) - ₹2,000 prize money

The declaration of the result of the essay competitions and the winners of the Essay Competition on “Challenges of Air Pollution in India and How to Handle It” were announced and felicitated.
🥇 *Pritisha Devi* (Department of Botany), was won the first prize along with - ₹3,000 prize money and other gifts along with certificates.
🥈 *Arnav Baruah* placed second (Department of Botany) along with gifts and the prize money of - ₹2,000 prize money
🥉*Ashim Ilahi* winning the third prize (Department of Political Science)gifts and certificates along with the - ₹1,000 prize money.
The students of the department and those of departments of Geography, Political Science, History, Chemistry and Mathematics took part won prizes and in the overall inspired by this inter departmental event.

Today Department of Botany organised Har Govind Khorana Memorial Lecture, 2026. The program started with offering of flowers to the portrait of Dr H R Khorana by the Principal of the Dr P K Bhattacharya, teachers and students. The invited speaker was Dr Manab Sharma, Former Adjunct Associate of Canberra University, Australia. He delivered a speech on Scientific Way of Exploring Plant World, followed by a detailed interactive session with students of the Department. The program was organised in the Conference Hall-2 of Arya Vidyapeeth College where a large number of students participated in the program. Before the Lecture program Prof. Har Govind Khurana was remembered in a speech about his life and work by Jaydeep Das, a student of Department from 6th Sem. Head of Department Dr N Saikia offered the vote of thanks. The program was co-ordinated by Dr P Devi of Dept of Botany.

The Second Edition of the departmental e-magazine Verdant was successfully inaugurated on 24 February 2026 in a gracious ceremony marked by enthusiasm and pride. The magazine was formally launched by Dr. Biren Das, Dean of Science and Head of the Department of Mathematics, whose presence added great significance to the occasion.
The department expresses its sincere gratitude to Dr. Pradip Kumar Bhattacharyya, Principal of the institution, for his constant encouragement and support. The successful publication of this edition was made possible under the dedicated guidance of Dr. Nabin Saikia, Advisor-Editorial Board and Head of the Department of Botany, along with the continuous supervision of Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, Assistant Professor and Teacher-in-Charge.
Special appreciation goes to the hardworking student Editorial Team, led by Editor-in-Chief Ms. Drishti Priya Bharadwaj, whose tireless efforts over more than two months—working day and night diligently—brought the second edition of Verdant to fruition.

On 16th October 2025 the Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College (Autonomous) organised a field trip for the FYUGP 3rd Semester SEC students as part of the academic syllabus to Dimcha Mushroom Co-operative Society, Chandrapur where the students interacted with the Chairperson of the society and founder of a startup named Bajwi, Mrs. Tulika Gogoi Swargiary. The session covered the cultivation of mushrooms, processing, packing, marketing, value added food products, bakery etc.
During the return, the entire group paid a formal homage to the beloved artist Late Zubeen Garg at his final resting place in Sonapur. A total of 68 students were accompanied by Dr. Nabin Saikia, Head of the Department; Mr. Satya Nath Doley, Associate Professor and Dr. Jahnabi Gogoi, Assistant Professor.

On 10th September 2025, the Department of Botany, Arya Vidyapeeth College - Autonomous started the "Research Paper Presentation Series 2025" (Student Seminar) as a part of the practical component of the FYUGP 5th Semester Core paper on Phylogenomics and Paleobotany (BT-CE-5334). In this series the students creatively explain, present and discuss recent research articles published in various prestigious journals. Two groups presented two allotted papers which were attended by 50 students from various semesters and all faculty members of the Department of Botany.
Papers presented-
1. Plant genomes: Markers of evolutionary history and drivers of evolutionary change by Soltis and Soltis (2021).
2. Early evolution of land plants: Phylogeny, physiology, and ecology of the primary terrestrial radiation by Bateman et al. (1998).
